Everyone knows what a bank is. But do you know that there is an “eye bank” in China?
“Eye bank” is a database of iris information (虹膜信息数据库) of Chinese children. Zhaobao Technology started it to help police identify (鉴定) children.
Iris is a part of the eye. It is very special because people have different irises. We all know that no two people have the same fingerprints (指纹). Although people have different fingerprints, the Irises work better than fingerprints. Because they won’t change much as long as you are 18 months old. That sounds cool, right? So this is your special ID card. And that’s why iris information can be useful in identifying lost children and help people to find the lost children.
Now there is over 93,000 Chinese children’s iris information in the database. The Zhaobao Technology says writing iris information into the eye bank only takes a few seconds and will not bring any harm (伤害) to the children. Have you ever forgotten where your socks are when you wake up in the morning? Can you remember what you ate for lunch a week ago? You may think that being forgetful is not a good thing. But now you should be thankful.
Scientists from University of Toronto found that forgetting actually is a key part of learning. Getting rid of (除去) unnecessary information can help our brains work better.
What kind of information is unnecessary? Scientists say that this may have something to do with the environment you live in.
In an environment that is always changing, our brains may require us to remember less. For example, a supermarket cashier (收银员) meets many people every day and will probably only remember them for a short time. But a designer (设计师) who often meets his or her clients (客户) will remember longer.
“That’s because our brains keep making new neurons (神经元) from stem cells (干细胞). ”said Paul Frankland, a professor at the University of Toronto.
There is a special area in our brains called hippocampus (海马体). It is important for us to learn and remember. When new neurons fit in the hippocampus, they renew our old memories. This could explain why you forget so much information about the time when you were very young.
However, being forgetful is not always good. When you don’t have enough sleep, you may have a hard time remembering new information. Sleep helps the brain store and keep new facts and information. Matthew Walker from the University of California told the Huffington Post.

One year, a newspaper reporter interviews him about how he grows it. His answer makes all very surprised, he says, “I give my corn seed(种子)to my neighbors.”
“How can you share your best corn seed with your neighbors?” the reporter asks, “You know they are taking part in the competition with you each year.”
“Why not, Sir?” says the farmer, “Don’t you know the wind picks up pollen(花粉)from corn and moves itquickly from field to field? If my neighbors grow bad corn, then cross-pollination(异花传粉)will affect(影响)the quality(品质)of mine. So if I want to grow good corn, I must help my neighbors to grow good one.”
The farmer knows much about the life. His corn cannot improve unless his neighbors’ corn improves.
