完形填空

Every night after dinner, my mother and I would sit at the kitchen table. She would present new tests, taking her 1 from stories of amazing children she had read in newspapers and magazines.

The first night she brought out a story about a three-year-old boy who knew the capitals of all the states in our country and 2 most of the European countries.A teacher also said the little boy could also pronounce the names of the foreign cities correctly.

“What’s the capital of Finland?” my mother asked me, looking at the magazine story.

All I knew was the capital of California.“Nairobi!” I guessed, saying the most 3 word I could think of.She checked to see if that was possibly one way to 4 “Helsinki” before showing me the answer.

The tests got 5 .One night I had to look at a page from the Bible(圣经)for three minutes and then report everything I could remember.I said all I remembered. And 6 I saw my mother’s disappointed(失望的)face once again, something inside of me began to 7 .I hated the tests, the raised hopes and failed expectations. Before going to bed that night, I looked in the mirror in the bathroom and when I saw only my face looking back-and that it would always be this 8 face-I began to cry.I made loud noises like a mad animal.

And then I saw what seemed to be the prodigy(奇才)side of me-because I have never seen that face before.I looked at myself in the mirror, blinking(眨眼)so I could see more 9 .The girl looking back at me was angry, strong. This girl and I were the same.I had new thoughts.I won’t let her 10 me.I won’t be what I’m not.

So the following nights when my mother presented 11 tests, I performed listlessly, my head on one arm.I pretended(假装)to be bored. And I was.I started to 12 other things.Soon, she noticed I was absent-minded.We had a talk and I told her what I thought and how I felt about the tests. Then the whole evening, she seemed to be thinking.

The next day, she presented me some easier tests.I found my pleasure and confidence back again, and we started to be on the way to make me a prodigy I could be.

仔细阅读下列短文, 根据题目, 选出最佳选项. Your Honor(法官大人)! Let me say a few words for myself. What they have told you is not true. I was not trying to kill anyone, and it was hardly possible to try to kill three strong young men at a time. I didn't have anything to kill people that night and was quite alone. I didn't know them and needn't hate them. I was attacked(袭击) by them, and I knocked one of them down, it's true, but I was made to do it, or I might be killed by them. I did this not because I hated the white men as they said. I just had to do so. While I was beaten in the dark street by the three men, a policeman came, caught me and then took me here. I know why I was beaten. I have just moved into a house next to these white men. I have felt that I am not welcome and I have tried to be quiet. I think, as an American, I have the right(权利) to choose where to live. If I'm guilty(有罪), what makes me guilty is my colour opposite to theirs and I can't enjoy justice(公正). Yet, I'm not guilty. This is all I want to say. Thank you, Your Honor.

Taking an after-school class will give you a head start in high school. But if it means walking home
every day, even in snow and rain, would you do it?
I did. I took part in an after-school Spanish class. Because it was after school, no school buses were
there to take me home when the class ended. And my parents couldn't pick me up, so I had to walk home.
At first I hated the walk because of the long distance. But after a few months, I got used to (习惯于)
it and it became one of my daily activities, like getting dressed and brushing my teeth. And I began to
enjoy it. I got to see things like birds flying and trees changing color. A few times I saw something very
special, like a small snake near the sidewalk, or two cars that came very close to crashing!
Many of my classmates saw what I did. Once, one girl in my class asked her mother to drive me
home because it was raining outside, and I didn't have an umbrella (雨伞). Some people who I didn't
know even gave me a ride - they thought it was too cold out.
People always think walking long distances is difficult. Modern technology (技术) makes common
things, like walking, seem impossible. Many people, like myself, live in the country and are close to
nature, but also far away from it because of technology.
