I was telling my boy Sonny the story of the hare and the tortoise. At the end I said, " Son, remember: Be slow and steady ( 镇定的), and that will win the race. Don't you think there's something to learn from the tortoise?"

Sonny opened his eyes wide, "Do you mean next time when I'm entering for the 60-metre race I should wish that Billy, Tony and Sandy would all fall asleep halfway?"

I was shocked, "But the tortoise didn't wish that the hare would fall asleep!"

"He must have wished that," Sonny said, "Otherwise how could he be so foolish as to race with the hare? He knew very well the hare ran a hundred times faster than he himself did."

"He didn't have such a wish," I insisted. "He won the race by perseverance, by pushing on steadily."

Sonny thought a while. "That's a lie," he said. "He won it because he was lucky. If the hare hadn't happened to fall asleep, the tortoise would never have won the race. He could be as steady as you like, or a hundred times steadier, but he'd never have won the race. That's for sure."

I gave up. Today's children are not like what we used to be. They're just hopeless.

There were many plants in a forest. When spring came, a big tree saw a red rose(玫瑰)nearby and said, “ What a beautiful flower! I wish I were that lovely.”

The rose proudly(骄傲地)said, “It seems that I am the most beautiful flower in the forest.” Then the rose looked at a cactus(仙人掌)and said, “Look at that ugly(丑的)plant full of thorns(刺)!”

“What a proud flower!” thought the tree.

As the days passed, the red rose often looked at cactus and said bad words about it, like “This plant is useless. I’m sorry to be his neighbour(邻居)!” The cactus never got angry and even tried to advise the rose, saying, “Everything has its use.”

Spring passed, and the weather became very hot. As there was no rain, the red rose began to wilt(枯萎).

One day the rose saw birds put their beaks(喙)into the cactus and then fly away. The red rose asked the big tree what the birds were doing. The big tree said that the birds were getting water from the cactus. “The cactus has water?” asked the rose. “Yes, you can also drink some from it. The birds water to you if you ask the cactus for help.”

The rose felt too ashamed(惭愧) to ask for water from the cactus. But finally it asked for help. The cactus was friendly to agree.

The rose learned a lesson that we should never judged anyone by their looking again.
