       Many years ago, there was a carpenter (木匠) who made a wooden girl that looked like a real  
one.  When a painter heard about it, he was very interested and paid the carpenter a visit.    
       The carpenter and the painter talked and drank until late at night.  Finally, the carpenter said. "I'll let
you rest now.  lf there's anything you need, just call the servant (仆人). " Then he went to sleep in another
room.    
       The painter told the servant girl to bring him a cup of tea, but she just stood there as if (似乎是)  she was not listening.  
       The painter realized that the servant girl was the wooden girl. He got very angry.     The next morning, the carpcnter wanted to see how amused the painter was.  He opened the door.  To his surprise,  there
was plenty of food on the table.  He was very happy.  He tried to cat a piece of bread, but couldn't pick
it up.  It turned out (原来) everything he was seeing was just a painting.     
       The carpenter was so embarrassed.  The painter went out and said,   "If you make fun of others,  
you'll be made fun of too ! "

     Ma Hua graduated from Fudan University. He had a good career in IT and a great life in Shanghai,
but he felt there was something missing from his life. He wanted to help others to improve their lives, so
in March 2003 he gave up his job. Then he moved to south-west China to do voluntary work in a village
primary school.
     He soon became an important member of the local people. In his class, he painted pictures on the
walls to help students remember English words. He also spent his money building a playground for the
children.
     Ma Hua quickly got used to his new life. He got great satisfaction from his work and felt very happy,

to all those who knew him, but it is a comfort to know that he lived happily, doing what he loved and

     An increasing number of children are flying and traveling around China on their own.
     Eleven-year-old Guo Yongyi quickly finds her place in Row 38 on the three-houi morning flight
from Beijing to Shenzhen , Guangdong province. She takes the window seat and calls for the flight
attendant (乘务员) to ask for a blanket,places her purple backpack under the seat in front of her and
fastens her seat belt. Guo has just spent her summer vacation with a cousin in Beijing and is re-turning
home for the new school term. She is among a growing number of children, aged between 5and 12,
traveling on their own by air during their school holidays. Like Guo , many children make visits to see
family members , while others fly to attend vacation camps.
     Guo first traveled all by herself when she was 7. At that time she had no idea about security
checks or what a boarding gate was. In the plane she was too to ask for a drink or a blanket.
Now, everything is different. She behaves naturally as if she is at home.
    When Guo's flight returns from Shenzhen, it has two other children on the plane, 9-year-old He
Yinnan and 10-year-old Gong Hao.  He, a beautiful little girl with large clear eyes,needs more help.
After finding out He feels sick , Ma Ning , an attendant, gives He a cup of water and suggests that she
takes a walk. "We try our best to become helpful 'aunts' for children," she said.
