题目内容

Mr. White was in bed and was trying to go to sleep when he heard the doorbell(门铃) ring. He turned on the light and looked at the clock. It was half past twelve. “Who can be it at this time of night?” he wondered. He decided to go and find out. So he got out of bed, put on his jacket and went to the door. When he opened the door, there was nobody there. “That’s very strange,” he thought. Then he went back to his bedroom, took off his jacket, got back into bed, turned off the light and tried to go to sleep.
A few minutes later he heard the doorbell ring again. Mr. White jumped out of the bed very quickly and rushed to the door. He opened it, but again he found no one there. He closed the door and tried not to feel too nervous. Then he saw a piece of paper on the floor inside the door. He picked it up. There were some words on it:’ Now it’s after midnight, so it’s April 1st. Happy April Fool’s Day!”
“ Oh, it was the funny boy next door!” Mr. White smiled.

Long ago, there lived in Greece a learned man. He was so well-known for his wide knowledge of almost everything that lots of people from all over the country came to learn things from him. The great man taught his students whole-heartedly and answered their questions with great patience.
One day a student asked him, “My dear teacher, didn’t you say you yourself had many more questions about things than we did? On the contrary, we students have far more than you.”
With a smile, the teacher drew two circles—one as a big wheel, the other smaller.
“Of course, I’ve learned much more. But a teacher does not necessarily have fewer questions than his students. Now look at these two circles. Within the big one is my knowledge of things, and within the smaller one is yours. Out of the circles is what is still unknown to us. Since mine is larger, the line that marks out the circle is longer. That means I have more opportunities to face what is still unknown. And that’s why I myself have more questions than you do. The more you learn, the more questions you have. You never learn enough, you know.”

Many students feel it difficult to remember new words when they begin to study English. Now I will give you some advice. 1. Do not waste(浪费) time in learning a list(词汇) of English words. It is the hardest way to remember English words. How do you learn to speak Chinese? You did it by listening carefully to the people talking to each other. You can find radio programs, TV programs and records, and listen to them carefully. The best way to learn all new words is through ear. As you listen to more and more dialogues, you will learn how English is pronounced in phrases and sentences. Of course, it is not enough to learn new words; you must learn how words are put together, and why some words in English are emphasized. 2. Some people have found that they can learn the names of everyday objects, such as box, cup, desk and so on, in the following way. They write the names of subjects, they say the words. Try this and see if this way works for you. If it does not, then go on to practice your dialogues.

Popular breakfast foods in the United States, as in many other countries around the world, include coffee, milk, juice, eggs and bread. Some other breakfast items served in the United States are thought by many to be traditionally American. However, they actually come from other countries.
A very popular breakfast food in America is the pancake---a thin, flat cake made out of flour and often served with maple syrup. The idea of the pancake is very old. In fact, pancakes were made long ago in ancient China.
Bagels, a round thick bread with a hole in the middle, are also popular for breakfast in America. Polish people in the late 1600s came up with the idea for the first bagels and this new kind of bread soon took off across Eastern Europe.
In the late 1800s, thousands of Jews from Eastern Europe traveled to the United States and brought the recipe for bagels with them. Today, New York bagels are said to be the best in the world. Many people have them with cream cheese for breakfast on the go.
Doughnuts (usually spelled “donut” in the United States) came from France. They were served to American soldiers in France during World War Ⅰ(第一次世界大战). After the war, American soldiers asked cooks in the United States to make doughnuts for them. Now, served with coffee, they are a very popular breakfast food across the United States.
