Every day Tom went to the market to buy food and other things. He put them in a big basket but he was old and weak, so he always paid another man to carry the basket home for him. But one Saturday, while he was walking home in front of the man with the basket, the man ran away with it.

The next Saturday, when Tom went to the market again, a friend of his said, “Look, there he is! The man stole (偷) your things last week.”

Tom at once hid (藏) behind a shop and stayed there until the man left the market.

His friend was very surprised, “Why did you do that?” he asked. “Well,” said Tom, “that man was carrying my basket when he left me a week ago. He will want me to pay him for seven days’ work, and that will cost me more than a basket full of things!”

      Tom arrived at the bus station quite early for a bus to Paris. It would not leave until five to twelve. He
saw a lot of people waiting at the station. Some were standing in line, others were walking around.
      There was a group of schoolgirls.  Their teacher was trying to keep them in line. Tom looked around
but there was no place for him to sit.
      He walked into a station caff (小餐馆). He looked up at the clock there. It was only twenty to twelve. He found a seat and sat down before a large mirror on the wall. Just then, Mike, one of Tom's friends,
came in and sat with Tom.
       "What time is your bus?" asked Mike.
       "There is still 15 minutes left," answered Tom.
       "Well, we have enough time to have a cup of tea," said Mike.
       They talked while drinking. Then Tom looked at the clock again."Oh! It's going backward (向后) !"
he cried. "A few minutes ago it was twenty to twelve and now it's half past eleven. "
        "You are looking at the clock in the mirror," said Mike. Tom was sad, because he had to wait for
another bus.
