China's worst drought in fifty years is doing harm to most of the country's south. Hubei, Hunan, Jiangxi,
Anhui and Jiangsu provinces have suffered the most because of little rain.35 million people have been affected
by the big thirst, according to China's Ministry of Civil Affairs. 4 million of them cannot get safe drinking water.
Dongting Lake in Hunan has now become smaller by two thirds. Gao Yibing, fisherman, said, "No eggs
were produced, so there's no young fish. We would not be able to fish anything in autumn and winter."
Part Two
Medecims Sans Frontieres, or Doctors Without Borders, is a group that helps people in need. In 1971,
some French doctors and journalists formed MSF. In 1999, MSF won the Nobel Peace Prize.
Doctors of MSF go to different countries to help poor people for free. These people are sick and hurt.
They do not have enough money, food or water.
MSF work in more than 70 countries including Iraq and Sudan. There are wars, disasters or diseases in
these countries. MSF doctors treat these sick people and speak out for them. They try to tell the world about
what they see in the poor countries. This makes the world pay more attention to these places.

Meeting the English Family

Rosa and her classmates were in a street in West London. The sky was dark. This was Rosa's big day, her first day in England.

Rosa got out of a taxi. The driver carried a very heavy bag for her. They walked through the rain to the front door of a big Victorian house.

A small girl opened the door. She was four years old. Her brother stood behind her. He was only two years old. One minute later, a young woman came to the door.

“Welcome to Wembley!” she said and she offered Rosa her hand.  “These are my two children, Elisabeth and Isaac” “Pleased to meet you, Mrs. Frost! said Rosa with a strong Spanish accent.

The two children ran back into the living room.

“Don't worry about them! They're a little shy. And please call me Diana! Now let me show you your room and then we can have a nice cup of tea. Or would you like some coffee?”

“I'd like to try a cup of English tea, made in England.”

“This is your bedroom. There's a nice view (视野) of the football stadium (露天体育场) and here's a little desk where you can study. The bathroom and toilet are just opposite your door. Now I'll go and put the kettle on.”

  “Excuse me. What's a kettle?”

“In England, we use a kettle to make hot water, we can then put the hot water in a teapot or use it to make coffee.”

Rosa was happy with her new home, but she was a little puzzled (困惑的). Perhaps her mother Maruja was right. The British were not normal people. They did not kiss when they met and they lived in large Victorian palaces. Their favourite drink was tea and they used strange metal kettles to make the water hot. What was she going to say to Elisabeth and Isaac? How could she make friends with two shy English children? Perhaps the answer was in the big, black psychology (心理学) book.

Grace was fourteen years old and was in Grade Eight. She had a part-time job, so she had to get up at five o’clock. She was a newspaper girl.

Each morning, Grace left the house at 5:15. She always rode a bike to the corner to carry the newspapers.

In winter it was still dark when she got up, but during the rest of the year it was bright. Grace had to send newspapers to people’s houses in all kinds of weather. She tried to put each paper in the box where it would be kept safe from wind, rain or snow. Her customers thought she did a good job. Sometimes they gave her tips(小费).

Grace made about $70 each month and she was saving some of the money to go to college. She spent the rest on tapes and clothes. Once a month she got the money from her customers together. Since many of them worked during the day, Grace had to get the money at night. Sometimes when Grace was ill, her elder brother had to send the newspapers and Grace’s father had to help her.

Grace had 70 customers now, but she hoped to get more soon. Some day, if she got more customers, perhaps Grace could win a prize(奖赏) for being a very good newspaper girl. She wanted to win a visit to Europe, but she would be happy if she won a new bike.
