This happened to me at the age of twelve. It seems like a long time to remember the name of the old lady. Yet it keeps in my  35 that she taught me a lesson in tolerance(宽容) which I shall never forget.
On a winter afternoon, a friend and I were  36 stones onto the roof of the old lady’s house. I found myself a perfectly smooth stone and threw it out. The stone was too smooth, however, so it slipped(滑) from my hands and  37  straight not for the roof but for a small window on the old lady’s back porch(门廊). At the sound of broken   38 , we knew we were in trouble and ran away.
I was too scared(胆怯) about getting caught by the old lady that first night. However, a few days later, when I was sure that I hadn’t been   39 , I started to feel guilty(有罪的) for what I had done. She  40 greeted me with a smile each day when I gave her the newspaper, but I was no longer able to act comfortably.
I made up my mind to  41 for her window with my paper delivery(发送) money I collected. I put the money in an envelope with a note explaining I was  42  for breaking her window and hoped that the seven dollars would cover the cost for repairing it.
I waited  43 it was dark, snuck(悄悄地走) up to the old lady’s house and put the letter I didn’t sign in her door. Once again, I could have the freedom of lookingstraight  44 the old lady’s kind eyes.
The next day, I handed the old lady her paper and was able to return the warm smile that I was  45 from her. She thanked me and gave me a bag of cookies.
Reaching for the cookies, I  46 an envelope and pulled it out of the bag. When I opened the envelope, I was surprised to see the seven dollars and a short note that said, “I’m proud of you!”

John was a bookseller. He didn’t like paying for anything. One day he let a big box of books fall on his foot. “Go to the doctor,” said his wife. “No,” he said, “I’ll wait until the doctor comes into the shop next time. Then I’ll ask about my foot. If I go to see him, I’ll have to pay him.”

The next day the doctor came into the shop and bought some books. When John was getting them ready, he told the doctor about his bad foot . The doctor looked at it. “Yes,” said the doctor, “you must put that foot in hot water every night.” “Thank you,” said the bookseller, “and now sir, here are your books.” “How much?” said the doctor. “Two pounds,” answered John. “Good,” said the doctor. “I shall not have to pay you anything.” “Why?” asked John in surprise. “I told you about your foot . Dear John, Thank you very much for your letter. I am glad that you enjoyed your holiday with me. We enjoyed having you and your sister here. We hope that you will both be able to come again next year. Perhaps you’ll be able to stay longer next time you come. A week is not really long enough, is it? If your school has a five-week holiday next year, perhaps(或许) you’ll be able to stay with us for two or three weeks.

We have been back at school three weeks now. It feels like three months! I expect(期待) that you are both working very hard now that you are in Grade One. I shall have to work hard next year when I am in Grade One. Tom and Ann won’t be in Grade One until 2011.

They went for a picnic yesterday but I didn’t go with them because I cut my foot and I couldn’t walk very well. They went to an island and enjoyed themselves. Do you still remember the island? That’s where all five of us spent the last day of our holiday.

Tom, Ann and I send our best wishes to Betty and you. We hope to see you soon.

Yours sincerely,

Michael
