Dear Mom and Dad,

We have some exciting news for you. Maria is going to have a baby! We didn't tell you right away. At first the doctor said she might have some trouble with the baby. Now, he says she is just fine. She is very healthy and happy ---- and large! She still works on her paintings every day. But she stopped teaching art classes. She gets tired more quickly now.

There is going to be another big change in our lives. We' re moving back to New York! We want to be closer to you and to Jane. It is much nicer to be near the family for something important like a baby. Maria grew up in Mexico, and she doesn't have a family here. So that makes you more important to us.

Maria is a little worried about working in New York. She will have to start again there. In Italy, her paintings are already popular. But I' m sure people will like them in New York, too. There won' t be any problem with my job. I' m still working for The New York Times. I'll be working about the United Nations in New York.

We're planning to move next month. See you then!

Dear editor( 编辑),

Can't your newspaper do something about the custom (习惯) of hitchhiking?

A short time ago, on a car travel I counted at least 50 people standing beside the road, asking for rides. Many of them were young women.

Don't they understand how dangerous it is to get into the car driven by a stranger? How much do they know about the driver? Is he a good driver or not? They know nothing!

Many of these young hitchhikers may come from good families. Don't their parents teach them anything about the world? I always taught my children not to talk to strangers. I never let them take rides from people they didn't know.

Isn't there enough crime (犯罪) today without asking for trouble by hitchhiking? On the other hand, hitchhiking may bring some traffic trouble. Don't you think what I said is true?

A.the newspaper to let its readers know the danger of hitchhiking

Dear Fang,

How are you these days? I have been in England for two months. It’s not a long time for a newcomer, and there are still a lot of things to do. Sorry for not being able to write to you soon.

London is an old but beautiful city. There are lots of places of interest to visit. Last weekend I went along Thames River with some friends from Japan, Korea and some other countries. The modern skyscrapers(摩天大楼) among the old buildings impressed(给…留下印象) us deeply. The classes started two weeks after I arrived here alone. Besides the language, I’m trying to learn about the culture as well. British people are quite different from the Chinese. Do you know the people here do not shake hands as much as we do in China? And it’s never a good habit to make noise when you eat. They think it’s impolite.

There is so much to say, but I have to stop.

I will write to you soon again.

Love,

Harry
