Dear Mr. Zhu,
I'm writing to your magazine's "Teenagers Now" column (专栏) to ask for some help for my 16-year-old
son. At the moment, he refuses to do almost everything his mother and I ask him to do. He is our only child
and we treat him very well. His grandparents buy him many things, but he is still not polite to us. He refuses
to spend time with us or do as we tell him. Sometimes he acts as if he doesn't love us at all.
Now he refuses to do his homework, but wastes lots of time watching DVDs and listening to foreign
music. I cannot understand this music, so I don't like it. He also spends too much time in Internet cafes,
where he either plays games or chats online.
What should I do? Now I am giving him his freedom. However, I am worried that if I keep allowing
him to do what he wants, he may fail at school, or worse. How can I help my son without hurting our
relationship (关系)?
                                                                                                                             Yours,

Many people invented toys. Most of them were kids. Kids are better than adults at inventing toys. They
can use everything to make toys.
But sometimes adults can make the old ones more popular. For example, People first played yo-yos in
ancient (古代的) Greece. About two hundred years ago they became very popular with children, first in
England and then in the United States. Later people didn't like them, In 1928, Donald Duncan went into the
yo-yo business. He had some "Yo-yo men" and let them go door to door selling yo-yos. Soon more and more
people began to play yo-yos. Today the name Duncan still goes with yo-yo.
People named teddy bears after Teddy Roosevelt, a president of the United States. But he didn't invent

Radio and television are very popular in the world today. Many people watch TV. We call them viewers.
Perhaps more people listen to the radios. We call them listeners. Older people call the radio the wireless (无
线电). And in conversation people call television TV or the "tele".
The TV is, of course, more useful than the radio. On the TV you can see and hear what is happening. But
the radio is not disappearing. It's still with us. And the number of listeners is becoming larger. One reason for
this is that the invention of the transistor set (晶体管收音机) is sometimes very small. It's easy to carry. You
can put one in your pocket when you go to work. You can listen to the news broadcasts or radio lessons on
the bus. You can listen to them on your bike. You can put your own transistor set beside your pillow when
you go to bed. Besides radio broadcasts are better for blind people. And many old people's eyes are not good
enough to watch TV. When people are working, they can not watch TV. But they can always listen to music
on the radio. What's more, a TV set is usually more expensive than a transistor set.
