You know that eating a suitable diet and getting plenty of exercise help make your body healthy and strong. But did you know that there are ways to make your brain healthier and smarter?
Studies show that when the brains is forced to do something new, it creates new neural (神经元) pathways. The more pathways you have, the faster you can think and the better memory you will have. Wonderful steps towards a smarter brain are as follows:
Choose proper TV programs
Watching an average TV show needs very little brain power and brings the same result as giving no care to physical exercise. Your brain will become weak just as your muscles do,if you watch TV, choose something educational and full of information.
Travel
Traveling to a new country forces you to see and do things in a new way, making your brains more active.
Learning a new language
A new language learner usually uses different learning methods. Learning a language sharpens your brain and helps you prevent memory problems in later years.
Master a new subject
Each week, choose an animal, a bird or a fish, and read everything you can about it. Go on learning unitl you become an expert on the subject.
Use your non-dominant hand
If you are right-handed,use your left hand for everyday activities, or use your right hand if you are left-handed. Doing familiar things in a new way will cause your brain to create new neural networks.
Read often
As you read, take the time to look up people or places that aren’t familiar. Reading can enlarge your vocabulary if you search for words and expressions that you don’t know.
Calculate while you shop
As you put things in your shopping bag, total everything in your head. See how close you get to the actual total.
Play video games
Studies have found that some video games force you to use critical decision-making skills and can even improve students’ math grades.
So get into the habit of challenging your brain, and make yourself smarter!

Subject:  Somewhere in the Gulf of Mexico!
Hello again. We’re on holiday! My family won a prize – tickets for a round-world-trip on the Freedom of the Seas! Can you believe it? This is one of the biggest cruise(巡游)ships in the world – it‘s huge! It’s as long as 37 buses and can carry more than 4,000 passengers. That’s a lot of people! You know that I like to be very active, so at first I thought this cruise was going to be a little boring … I was so wrong! The ship has an ice-skating rink, an outdoor climbing wall (more than 13 meters high), two swimming pools, a water park and even a boxing ring. But best of all … the Flowrider! It’s a surfing attraction at the top of the ship. I tried it yesterday but I kept falling! I must try again this afternoon. Mom and Dad were also pretty impressed(印象)by the shopping mall on the ship. You’ve really got to see this fantastic ship – it’s truly spectacular(壮观). I’ll write again when I get home (Sunday) and tell you more about the cruise. Bye!

Parents often believe that they have a good relationship with their teenagers. But last summer, Joanna and Henry noticed a change in their older son: suddenly he seemed to be talking far more to his friends than to his parents. "The door to his room is always shut." Joanna noted.
Tina and Mark noticed similar changes in their 14-year-old daughter. "She used to sit in my arms on the sofa and talk with me," said Mark. "Now we joke that she does this only when she wants something. Sometimes she wants to be treated like a little girl and sometimes like a young lady. The problem is figuring out which time is which."
Before age 11, children like to tell their parents what's on their minds. "In fact, parents are first on the list." said Michael Riera, author of Uncommon Sense for Parents with Teenagers. "This completely changes during the teen years." Riera explained. "They talk to their friends first, then maybe their teachers, and their parents last."
Parents who know what's going on in their teenagers' lives are in the best position to help them. To break down the wall of silence, parents should create chances to understand what their children want to say, and try to find ways to talk and write to them. And they must give their children a mental break, for children also need freedom, though young. Another thing parents should remember is that to be a friend, not a manager, with their children is a better way to know them.

Indians always shake their heads when they talk to others. It doesn’t mean “No”. If someone wants to visit India, he should know this, or he will be in trouble.
One day, a foreign officer went to India on business. He hired a car and asked an Indian to drive him. When he told his driver to take him to his office, the Indian shook his head at once. The officer said again and the driver shook his head again. At last the officer, of course, got angry.
“How dare you refuse my order?” he shouted, “Drive me to my office at once!”
The driver answered in quite a loud voice, too. “Yes, sir!” But to the officer’s surprise, the driver shook his head at the same time.
The car started and the foreign officer was now too surprised to say a word. He thought about it for a while, and then he nodded with a smile, “‘No’ means ‘Yes’ here!”

What is the strongest part of your body? Your head? Bones? It’s your teeth! There is a special thing called enamel (牙釉质) in teeth. It is the hardest thing in the human body and keeps bacteria (细菌) away. However, teeth are vulnerable (易受伤害的) to problems and disease. September 20 is National Teeth-loving Day in China. Let’s pay attention to the health of our teeth.
Tooth     (1)   are    (1)   around the world. Most children and young adults have tooth decay (龋齿). A study published on China Health Monthly magazine this year showed that 40.74 percent of a sample (抽样) of 1,306 Chinese students under age 15 had decayed teeth.
(2)Food that is rich in sugar increases the risk of tooth decay. After you eat, bacteria go crazy over the sugar on your teeth, like ants at a picnic. The bacteria turn sugar into acids (酸) that eat away at tooth enamel. This cause holes in your teeth.
Another common problem is crooked teeth (龅牙). When your new teeth begin to grow and the old teeth haven’t fallen out, there isn’t enough space for the new ones. This causes crooked teeth.
Don’t worry. Here are some ways to keep your teeth healthy.
Brush at least twice a day – in the morning and before bedtime.
Learn to use dental floss (牙线). The floss gets rid of food that’s hidden where your toothbrush can’t get it.
Visit a dentist. He or she can check if you have any dental problems and help you clean your teeth.
Pay attention to what you eat. It is better to eat lots of fruits and vegetables instead of fries and drink water instead of soda.
Wear braces (牙套) to make your teeth straight and beautiful.

Saturday, June 16th
In the morning, we went camping in Green Natural Park. We were happy because it was a sunny day. We were looking forward to a wonderful two-day holiday. On the way, we kept singing and making jokes.
However, in the afternoon, when we finished our picnic at one o’clock, it was dark and windy. Soon, there was a shower(阵雨). Unluckily, none(没有人) of us brought an umbrella. We ran about but we could find no place to hide.
Twenty minutes passed and it was still raining. There were hours to go before we reached the campsite (野营地). It was even worse that our small compass (指南针) showed that we went to the wrong way. We lost our way!
We had to make a quick decision(决定)because it was raining heavily. Chris said we could put up a tent to hide in, so Mary and Tom helped to put up the tent. Chris and I tried to make a fire to keep us warm. But we weren’t able to light(点燃) the fire, because everything was wet. We dried ourselves, chatted and waited inside the tent. At about five o’clock, it stopped raining. We decided to give up (放弃)the camping trip because all of us were very tired.
This camping trip may not be successful (成功的) but we know each other better. And the most important thing I’ve learned from this camping trip is team spirit(合作精神).
