What does a policeman usually do? It is not an easy job to describe. After all, a policeman has a number of jobs in one. A policeman often has to control (控制) traffic, either on foot in the center of a town, or in a police car on the roads. In Britain, he might be in the Traffic Police and spend most of his time driving up and down main roads and motorways. A traffic policeman has to help keep the traffic moving and help when there is an accident.
A policeman has to keep peace, too. If there is a fight or some other disturbance, the police can come and restore order. And they often have to deal with situation at great risk(冒险) to their own safety.
We expect the police to solve crime, of course, so an ordinary policeman, even if he is not a detective (侦探), will have to help look for the criminals at times.
And who do we call when there is an emergency (紧急情况)---an crash, a fire, a road accident, or a robbery? We call the police. So a policeman has to be prepared to face any unpleasant emergency that may happen in the modern world.
The police do an necessary job, they do it very well and I support them, but I do not think that I could ever do the job of a policeman.

Mr. Brown was going away for a week. Before he left, he said to his son, “If anyone asks for me, you can tell him that your father has been out for doing something, and will be back in a week, then be sure to ask him to sit down for a cup of tea.”
“OK, Dad,” said his son. But he was afraid his son couldn't remember this, he wrote these words down on a piece of paper and gave it to him. His son put it into his small pocket, took it out and looked at it every now and then.
Four days passed, but no one came to see his father. The boy thought that there was no man to come and that the piece of paper was of no more use for him, so he burnt it that evening.
The next afternoon, someone knocked at the door. The boy opened it. A man was standing at the door and said, “Where is your father?” The boy put his hand into his pocket at once and looked for the piece of paper. He could not find it. For many American teenagers, having a part-time job is an important part of growing up. A part-time job can teach teenagers important skills like responsibility(责任), independence(独立),teamwork and leadership.
Young people can expand(扩大) their social circles beyond their classmates by making friends with co-workers. And many teenagers find that earning their own money gives them a sense of pride and freedom.
The US Department of Labor allows teenagers to apply for jobs at the age of 14. Popular part-time jobs include working in ice cream stores, coffee shops, and clothing stores. During the school year, teenagers may go to work a few times a week after their classes get out, then work for longer on the weekends.
In the summer, top jobs for teens include working at camps, swimming pools and amusement parks. These jobs are great for young people who want to be active and have fun while making money.
A favorite job for many teens is babysitting(临时替人看小孩), and they can start before 14 if the parents agree. After the children are sleeping and before the parents come home, babysitters have lots of freedom.
As long as they stay in the house and make sure the kids are okay, babysitters can do their homework, enjoy a snack, watch TV, or talk on the phone with friends.
