The teacher stood before his class of 30 students and was going to hand out the final exam papers. “I know how hard you have all worked to get ready for this test. ” he said. “And because I know you are all able to understand these questions. I am ready to offer a B to anyone who would prefer not to take the test. ’’
A number of students jumped up to thank the teacher and left the classroom. The teacher looked at the rest students and said. “Does anyone else want to get a B? This is your last chance. ”Two more students decided to go. Seven students stayed. The teacher then handed out the papers. There were only three sentences on the paper: Congratulations! You have received an A in this class. Keep believing in yourself.
I never had a teacher who gave a test like that. but I think that it is a test that any teacher could and should give. Students who do not have confidence in what they have learned are B students at most.
The same is true for students in real life. The A students are those who believe in what they are doing because they have learned from both successes and failures. They have learned life’s lessons. whether from school education or from events in their lives, and have become better people. Scientists say that by the age of eight,80% of what we believe about ourselves has already been formed. You are a big kid now and you realize that you have some limits(局限). In front of my daughter, Shelly, was a bowl filled with cabbage. She hated cabbage. She only sat there in silence with tears in her eyes.
“Shelly, my dear, why don’t you eat a little? If not, your mum will shout at us.”
Shelly didn’t feel happy. “OK, dad. I will eat, just a little.” Then Shelly said, “Dad, if I eat it all, will you give me what I want?”
“Yes.”
Slowly she began to eat. It took her almost half an hour to finish all the food in the bowl. Then she came up to me and said, “Dad, I want to have my hair cut off!”
“Shelly, why don’t you ask for something else? If we see your head like that, we’ll feel very sad,” I said.
“But Dad, you promised! Now you’re going back on your words. ”
I had to keep my promise. Shelly had all her hair cut off. She smiled.

When the ambulance (救护车) arrived a few minutes later, they said she was    . I was a real mess. I had to see a psychologist (心理医生) for the rest of the summer.
I miss Neesah so much and I      her always. She taught me how precious life is and that you should never hold a grudge      you never know when you’ll see that person again.

The story was a true one and still moved me deeply. Thirty years ago,I got to know a   36 lady named Rose. She had no kids and lived alone.     37   I went to visit her, I always took Rose some coffee and food. One day she said she    38    me to have hunch.
We walked from my work place to a little restaurant on David Street.    39    the way, I began to worry: I knew that she had no money, but if I offered(提供) to    40   the lunch,I was afraid I would hurt her.
There were many people in the    41    and all of them were happy. Rose told me to sit and drink coffee by the window. Then she went to    42  in the kitchen. After about 20 minutes, she came out and sat with me. She just paid for one meal and we started to   43  the delicious food together. She told    44    that the restaurant let people work for a meal if they had no money, or would give them a free meal if they were not able to work. To my surprise, she also explained that the workers who were working there were all    45   .
46    remember the beautiful afternoon I shared with Rose.    47    we had a meal together only once, it was paid by Rose's work. The weather was    48    and bright, and everyone's smile was warm and bright as well.
I’m still thinking that life cannot be easy to us, but we can still do     49    for our friends and neighbors. The world will be     50    if everybody would like to share happiness with others. It will never be dark if there is a light in everyone's heart.

On a cold November afternoon, my mother and I were walking back home from a pizza store. We had bought many things. We were dressed warmly, and I was feeling a little         as I was carrying our shopping bag, I decided to         something away. I was walking towards a dustbin         I noticed a poor man walking out of the restaurant in front of us. He headed over to the nearby dustbin and started looking through it.
I suddenly felt very         because I was about to throw away a new drink just because it was too heavy. Do you know star anise? It has a Chinese name “bajiao”(八角). You can find this spice(调味料) in almost all Chinese kitchens. Suddenly people around the world need the small fruit from which the spice is made, because of bird flu(禽流感).

Bird flu has made tens of millions of birds die and killed at least 60 people in Asia. Scientists say if flu changes to spread from person to person, it could kill millions!
A medicine called Tamiflu(达菲) is supposed to fight bird flu in humans. Roche, a Swiss company, developed it. But Roche says it hasn’t enough raw material(原料) to make lots of Tamiflu. The material is the Chinese spice star anise.
About 90% of the world’s star anise is produced in South China. The fruit is harvested(丰收) between March and May. Besides spice, people also use it as medicine.
People afraid of bird flu have begun to buy star anise and cook chicken and other meat with it more. But so far, no scientists say the spice could give protection(保护). Some scientists say that eating the fruit itself won’t help against bird flu.
