Shanghai is trying to bring new life to the old phone booths (电话亭). Six new types of booths are going to be built. One type will each offer 60 books to read or borrow. Another type will have users listen to audio books (有声书) and even record their own voices.

Shanghai is not the only city trying to save the old phone booths. The British care about them even more. The world’s first phone booth was built in the 1880s in Germany. But in the 1930s in UK painted them red and made them special in cities.

In recent years the country has thought of many ideas to help phone booths stay useful. The UK company British Telecom has added screens (屏幕) and wifi to some booths. Users can use them to surf online. Also, users can change the booth as they want to after renting (租) one from the company. Up to now, more than 1,500 phone booths have been turned into flower shops, mini-cafes, and even shower rooms.

Maybe in the future phone booths will become popular once again.

Mike Myers is a teacher at Chauncey Rose High School in Terre Haute, Indiana. Last year, he taught his students about the world’s rain forests. They learned that rain forests are important because the plants and animals of the rain forest give us food, wood, and medicine.

Destruction of the world’s rain forests is a serious problem. Unluckily, rain forests are disappearing at a rate of 80 acres (英亩) per minute! As part of a class project, Myers’ students bought three acres of rain forest in Central America. They paid $25 per acre. The students hope that the land they bought will be protected and not destroyed. The students became so interested in rain forests that they decided to get a closer look at a real rain forest.

So this June, Myers and four of his students took a boat ride down a river. They saw alligators and crocodiles. In the middle of the week, a guide took Myers and his students into the rain forest. “The monkeys were not happy that we were in their forest. They broke small branches off the trees and threw them at us,” one of the students said, “It was a great learning experience for all us,” said Myers.

Each student chose something specific about Costa Rica to study involving the plants, animals, food, and culture. During the last few days the group had time to do fun activities. They went whitewater rafting and horseback riding, and visited Costa Rica’s active volcano.

Myers hopes to make the trip every year with a different group of kids.

Myers also talked about the big disaster about the rain forest fires in the Amazon—the lungs of the Earth. The Amazon forests produce 20% of the world’s oxygen (氧气). Even if it’s just a small part of the rain forests that are destroyed, it’s a great loss to the whole world. That means, once an area of land burns, it doesn’t regrow as forest. Now Myers’ students know that we should try to protect the rain forests, or the last drop of water on the earth will be our tears.

1.How much did Myers’ students pay for the rain forest they bought?

A.$25 B.$75 C.$80 D.$2000

4.What will cause “The last drop of water on the earth will be our tears”?

A.Killing some pigs and beef for meat.

D.Traveling in the rain forest.

5.The passage mainly shows that Myers and his students __________.

A.did something to protect rain forest

B.wanted to buy the rain forest in Costa Rica

C.were interested in the culture of Costa Rica

D.went to the rain forest for various fun activities.

We send our children to school to prepare them for the time when they will be big and will have to work for themselves. They learn their own language (语言) so that they will be able to tell others clearly what they want and what they know, and understand what others tell them. They learn foreign languages in order to be able to understand the people from other countries and make themselves understood. They learn history to know something about people they meet every day. What they learn at school is, of course, quite useful, but is that the only reason why they go to school?

No, there is more in education (教育) than just learning facts. We go to school, above all (首要的是), to learn how to learn, so that when we leave school, we can continue (继续) to learn. A man who really knows how to learn will always be successful, because whenever (无论何时) he has to do something new, he will quickly teach himself how to do it in the best way. The uneducated person, on the other hand, is not able to do something new, or do it badly. So the purpose (目的) of school is not only to teach the students these useful subjects but also teach the way to learn.

1.Children go to school because ________.

A.they can grow fast at school B.they can learn facts

C.they have to work for themselves at the moment D.their parents have to prepare them for their future

2.The underlined word “successful” means “________” in Chinese.

A.忧郁的 B.失败的 C.迷茫的 D.成功的

3.The sentence “there is more in education than just learning facts” means “________”.

A.learning facts isn’t the only thing in education B.there are more facts to learn in education

C.learning facts is more important than education D.education is just learning facts

4.What does an educated person do when he meets something new?

A.He won’t try his best to do it well. B.He’ll quickly find the best way out.

C.He won’t be able to do it well. D.He will know how to learn.

5.The main idea of the passage is that ________.

A.children must go to school

B.the subjects at school are useful

C.parents should send their children to school

D.children should be taught not only to learn but also how to learn
