My name is Jack. When my family moved to America from a small village in Guangdong, China, we
brought not only our luggage, but also our village rules, customs and culture. One of the rules is that young
people should always respect the elders. Unluckily, this rule led to my very first embarrassment in the United
States.
I had a part-time job as a waiter in a Chinese restaurant. One time, when I was serving food to a middle-aged couple, the wife asked me how the food could be served so quickly. I told her that I had made sure they got
their food quickly because I always respect the elderly. As soon as I said that, her face showed great
displeasure. My manager, who happened to hear what I said, took me aside and gave me a long lecture about
how sensitive(敏感) Americans are and how they dislike the description"old". I then walked back to the table
and apologized to the wife. After the couple heard my reason, they understood that the problem was caused by
cultural differences, so they laughed and were' no longer angry.
In my village in China, people are proud of being old. Not so many people live to be seventy or eighty, and
people who reach such an age have the most knowledge and experience. Young people always respect older
people because they know they can learn from their rich experience.
However, in the United States, people think"growing old" is a problem since "old" shows that a person is
going to retire or that the body is not working well. Here many people try to keep themselves away from
growing old by doing exercises or jogging, and women put on make-up, hoping to look younger. When I told
the couple in the restaurant that I respect the elderly, they got angry because this caused them to feel they had
failed to stay  young. I had told them something they didn't want to hear.
After that, I changed the way I had been with older people. It is not that I don't respect them any more; I
still respect them, but now I don't show my feelings through words.

only twenty-one when I started traveling. The first country I went to was Mexico. At first, I studied
Spanish for six months in Mexico City. Then I traveled to other parts of Mexico, and all over South
America. My favorite country was Peru. It has everything-great beaches, tall mountains, and forests
with lots of strange and wonderful animals. Brazil is the only South American country I've never visited,
but I'm a great fan of their football team! I hope to watch a football match in Brazil one day.
What other countries have I been to? Well, I've been to most parts of Asia. I spent three years in
China, and I lived in India for five years. However, I've never been to Japan. My friends tell me it's

My mother used to ask me what is the most important part of the body. Through the years I would
guess at what I thought was the correct answer.
When I was younger, I thought sound was very important to us as humans, so I said, "My ears,
Mommy." She said, "No. Many people are deaf. But you keep thinking about it and I will ask you again
soon."
Several years passed before she asked me again. Since making my first attempt, I had contemplated the
correct answer. So this time I told her, "Mommy, sight is very important to everybody, so it must be our
eyes." She looked at me and told me, "You are learning fast, but the answer is not correct because there are
many people who are blind."
Over the years, Mother asked me a couple more times and always her answer was, "No, but you are
getting smarter every year, my child."
Then last year, my Grandpa died. Everybody was hurt. Everybody was crying. My Mom looked at me
when it was our turn to say our final good-bye to Grandpa. She asked me, "Do you know the most important
body part yet, my dear? " I was shocked when she asked me this now. I always thought this was a game
between her and me. She saw the confusion on my face and told me, "This question is very important. It
shows that you have really lived your life." I saw her eyes well up with tears. She said, "My dear, the most
important body part is your shoulder." I asked, "Is it because it holds up your head?" She replied, "No, it is
because it can hold the head of a friend or loved one when they cry.
Everybody needs a shoulder to cry on sometime in life, my dear. I only hope that you have enough love
and friends that you will have a shoulder to cry on when you need it." Then and there I knew the most
important body part is not a selfish one. It is sympathetic to the pain of others.
