Mary did not understand these sentences “She is blue today.” “You are yellow.” “He has a green thumb(大拇指).” “He told a while lie.” She went to her teacher for help.
Mary:Excuse me, Miss Smith, there are color words in these sentences. What do they mean?
Miss Smith:In everyday English, Mary. “Blue” sometimes means “sad”. “Yellow” means “afraid”. A person with a green thumb means he grows plants(种植植物) very well. And “a white lie” is not a bad one.
Mary:Would you give me an example(例子) for a white lie?
Miss Smith:Certainly. Now I give you some cakes. But you don't like it. What will you say?
Mary:I will say “No, thanks. I'm not hungry.”
Miss Smith:That's a white lie.
Mary:Oh, I see. Thank you very much.
