题目内容

A small boy was trying to move a heavy wooden box out of his yard. The box was much bigger than the boy. He tried his best to move it, but the box would not move at all. After resting for a short time, the boy tried to move it once more. He pushed and shoved (推) with every muscle in his body, but he couldn’t even move the box an inch (英寸). He was worn out and discouraged (气馁的).

The boy’s father was coming home from work around this time. He stopped to watch his son’s fruitless efforts (努力). The father didn’t help him, but instead asked, “Son, have you tried your best and are you doing everything you can?”

“Yes, I am!” the boy cried.

“No,” his father said calmly (平静地), “You’re not. You have not asked me to help you.”

Asking for help is not a weakness. At some point, even the best of us need help. It is important to know when to ask for help and understand why you need it. Never be afraid to ask others for help when you’re in trouble.

I have been drawing for as long as I can remember. When I was a child, my parents were very busy. And for my generation, we didn’t have the internet. In order to entertain myself, I found pens and paper, and I just started drawing.

At that time, I thought of drawing just as a hobby. But I was tired of studying for school exams. I wanted to do something creative. One day, it hit me: How nice would it be if I could do what I love for a living? I did research on the best art schools around the world. One of my friends studied art in the United States. She advised me to go to the Rhode Island School of Design(RISD). That was the only school I applied to after I graduated from high school.

Luckily, I was accepted into the RISD. There were new skills to learn every day. At first, I was a little confused. I tried many different things. Chris Baselli, one of my teachers, helped me to find my own style.

Now, I’ve been working as a full-time illustrator( 插 画 师 ) for ten years. I’ve drawn for newspapers and magazines such as The New York Times and The New Yorker. I’ve also worked with companies like McDonald’s and Apple. Some clients(客户) keep coming back to me. They love my style.

When I get an assignment( 任 务 ), I read it over a lot of times. I try to work out the most important message that I need to include in my work. Then, I forget about the assignment for a while— the best idea often pops up when I am not thinking too hard.

I’m still at the early stage of my career. One of the biggest fears that I have is losing the excitement. I hope that will never happen so that I can keep creating wonderful designs.
