As Sam slowly woke, he got a funny feeling in his stomach. He knew he would have to do something that he had been afraid to do for a long time.
The school bus came on time, and he sat with his friend, Billy. They chatted about baseball. It was a great way to get his mind off what he had to do later. As they got close to the school, he could feel his heart beating. His hands were starting to sweat. He hated this!
He entered Mrs. Owens’ class. She was smiling, and saying hello to all her students as she did every morning.
“Hi, Sam!” she said as he walked in.
“Hi,” he said and quickly sat in his seat. Then the class began to take their spelling test. He looked at the clock. The time was near. He hoped he was not first! Mrs. Owens said it was time to begin their special day.
“Sam, you’ll be first.” Mrs. Owens said to the class, “Sam has worked very hard on his report on Hawaii, and I know it is very interesting.”
Sam nervously greeted his class. Then, he thought about the fun things he had read about surfing, volcanoes, and pineapples in Hawaii, and he started to talk. He talked in front of the whole class, and it was fun. The class clapped as he finished and Mrs. Owens was smiling. It wasn’t terrible at all and he knew he would do better the next time.

Dear editors (编辑),
I’m a slow (慢的) student in my class. Most of my classmates are much better than me. So I get very stressed out. It’s difficult to keep on working hard and it’s really not fun. And I think although I spend much time studying for the tests, I can’t get good grades. My father gives me some help sometimes. He tells me not to worry about it. But what do you think I should do?
Xia Ming
A reader read the letter from the magazine and here is his answer:
Dear Xia Ming,
Many famous people are not so good at the age like you. Edison, the famous scientist, had a bad headache for his studies when he was a 12-year-old boy. But everyone knows that he did a lot for the people in the world. And Newton had the same story like him. When you are feeling stressed out, just smile (微笑) and take a deep breath (深呼吸), then try your best. You should believe tomorrow is another day.

Close contacts between Japan and the rest of the world were created in the twentieth century. In the last forty years, business contacts between Japan and the West have become very important. Many foreign companies now have offices in Japan and Japanese businessmen do business around the world. Differences between Japanese and Western ways of doing business, however, often bewilder foreign businessmen and make doing business in Japan difficult for foreigners.
The American businessman, for example, wants to start talking business immediately. He does not want to wait. The Japanese businessman, on the other hand, likes to arrive at decisions after giving them serious thought. Another thing foreign businessmen have difficulty in understanding is when a Japanese means “Yes” or “No”. This is because of cultural differences between Japanese and Western society(社会), Which make it difficult for a Japanese to say “No” directly.
In the USA, it is easy to say “No” to something one does not want to do. But in Japan, it is very difficult to say “No”. To refuse an invitation or a request(请求) with “No” is felt to be impolite. It is thought to be selfish and unfriendly. So instead of saying “No” directly, the Japanese have developed many ways to avoid(避免) saying “No”. These can help them avoid hurting other people’s feelings. However, this often makes their ways of doing business rather difficult for foreigners to understand and follow.

According to a new survey, student safety has become a big problem. Nearly 50% of students say they are worried about robbery(抢劫) on the way to and from school. Now in many big cities in China, some schools have taught an unusual lesson: self-protection(自我保护). Students like this lesson because there are no exams or boring classes. And they can learn how to save lives and know how to stop danger before it really happens.
Chen Haoyu, a teacher at Beijing No.25 Middle School and a self-protection expert(专家), gives young students advice on how to deal with danger.
If you are robbed
Keep calm. If you can not cry for help or run away, give the robber your money. Try to
remember what the robber looks like and tell the police later.
If you are in a traffic accident
If a car hurts you, you should remember the car number; if it is a bicycle, try to call your
parents before you let the rider go. This is because you don’t know how badly you are hurt.
If it is raining hard and there is lightning(闪电)
Don’t stay in high places and keep away from trees.
When there is a fire
Get away as fast as you can. Put wet things on your body and try to find an exit (出口).
Do not take the lift!
If someone is drowning (溺水)
If you can’t swim, don’t get into the water. Cry out for help. Remember that danger is never as far away as you think. Take care of yourself at all times!
