Have you ever wondered what goes through your mind when you choose where to sit in a new classroom? Or in a waiting room full of strangers? Or on a bus? Researchers have found out some interesting facts.
Perhaps unsurprisingly, we prefer to sit closer to people like ourselves. Girls sit by girls and boys sit by boys. Adults sit together and young people choose another young person to sit near. But it goes further than this. We even choose to sit near someone who looks like us. People with glasses are more likely to sit near other people with glasses. People with long hair sit closer to other people with long hair.
We seem to believe that people with similar habits or hobbies will share similar attitude and we are more likely to be accepted by people like ourselves or even, we think we may be safer with people who look like us. Sometimes that’s true but it's a pity if we always stick to the same people, the same group. The danger in always staying in our comfort zone (舒适区)is that we just recycle the same opinions, the same tastes and the same ideas. We lose the chance to learn something new, find out about interesting things, hear funny stories and discover difference.?
When we always stick to the same people, how can we ever break down the barriers which prevent us from getting to know people with different ideas? And how can we avoid the ignorance (无知),which too often leads to prejudice (偏见) and even fear? If instead you want to live in a society that opens to changes and new things and different opinions, be the cat among the pigeons.
Move out of your comfort zone. Go and sit next to someone different. And don't just sit there in silence. Say hello. Ask a question. Start a conversation. That’s how we make friends. That’s how we learn about people. That’s how we open our minds to new ideas. That's how we live an exciting life.

I think I’ve always been interested in food. My grandparents lived on a farm in Lincolnshire and had a good      . She made fantastic English food; her roast beef was out of this world. I used to love going down to the         and watching her work, and I learned a lot from her. I realized that I wanted to be a cook when I was about 12. When other boys         to do sports after school, I helped with cooking at home. When I was 15, I         to be a cook. However, I knew my parents wouldn’t allow me to be a cook. I had to tell them about it         .
I told them that I wanted to do a cookery course for fun, and stayed for a month in a hotel in Torquay. I enjoyed it so much that I couldn’t put off telling my parents any longer,       I brought the subject up one night over dinner.      there was silence, and then my father asked me why. I explained that cooking was        painting a picture or writing a book. Every meal was a work of creation(创造). I could see that my father disagreed, but he was not     . If you live in the United States, the law(法律) says you can’t have a full-time job until you are 16 years old. At 14 or 15, you can work part-time after school or on weekends, and during summer vacations you can work 40 hours each week. Does that mean if you are younger than 14, you can’t make your own money? Of course not! Kids who are between the ages of 10 and 13 can make money by doing lots of things.
Valerie, 11, often makes money by cleaning up other people’s yards. Lana , 13, makes money by knitting(织)sweaters for dogs and selling them to her neighbors, and Lisa said she had started taking art classes and showing her works to people. People have asked her draw pictures for them and they pay her for them. Jasmine, 12, writes articles for different magazines!
Making money is learning. By working to make your own money, you are learning the skills you need to succeed in life. These skills can include things like getting along with others, using technology(技术) and using your time. Some people think that asking for money is a lot easier than earning(挣) it. However, when you make your own money, you don’t have to depend on someone else. The five dollars that you earn will probably make you feel a lot better than the twenty dollars you ask for.
