Every sport has its great legends:soccer has Pele, basketball has Michael Jordan, and tennis, Steffi Graf.Is there one athlete who people consider to be the best ever? Many would say that person is boxer Muhammad Ali, known to his many fans as ‘the greatest.’

Ali was born in Louisville, Kentucky in 1942.At the age of twelve, after his bike was stolen, young Ali began boxing; by the time he reached high school, he was a great amateur(业余)boxer. After winning six state and two national boxing championships, he competed in the 1960 Olympic, where he won a gold medal. That same year, at the age of eighteen, he became a professional boxer.

From the start of his career it was clear that Ali was different from other athletes. He was outspoken, confident, strong-willed and talked publicly about himself and his beliefs(信仰).The man who called himself ‘the greatest’ still faced many challenges, though. After winning his Olympic gold medal, he returned home to the United States. He was not allowed to stay in certain hotels or eat in certain restaurants because of the color of his skin.Ali was disgusted(反感)with racism in the U.S., so he threw his Olympic medal into a river.

In 1964, Ali beat Sonny Liston to become the world heavyweight champion.Ali surprised the world again in 1966, not for his boxing skills, but for his political beliefs. He disagreed with the U.S.war in Vietnam and refused to join the army, which all young men in the U.S.had to do at the same time.As a result, Ali’s heavyweight title was taken away, and he was sent to prison for five years.

Ali retired(退休)from boxing in 1981, ending a career of sixty-one fights, of which he won fifty-six.In 1996, he was recognized as a sporting hero at the opening ceremony of the Olympic Games in Atlanta. The crowd at the Game cheered as Ali, now suffering from Parkinson’s disease, lit the Olympic flame-no longer the strongest, but still the greatest.

Zhang Li lies in bed sadly. The 24-year-old young man lost his right leg because of a blood disease (血液病). The doctor said that his 10 years of smoking had caused the disease.

“I first smoked a cigarette when I was in Junior 3. It made me feel like a man and I thought it looked cool. Now I know I was really wrong,” said Zhang.

According to the 2008 China Tobacco Control report (中国烟草控制报告), 130 million young people who are under 18 years old have tried smoking. Fifteen million of them are addicted (上瘾的).

The report came out on May 31, World No-Smoking Day. It also found that nearly 68% of teenage smokers smoked their first cigarette before the age of 13. Those living in big cities started even earlier.

“Some tobacco companies try to make cigarettes cool and attractive. It’s just to make money,” said Yang Gonghuan, a doctor. In fact, smoking is one of the top killers in China. Each year 1 million people die from smoking-related (与吸烟有关的) diseases. Smoking causes illnesses like lung cancer and heart disease.

Doctors say that the younger a person starts smoking, the worse it will be. If a person starts smoking as a teenager, he or she may live twenty-two years less than non-smokers.

We parents like to make sure that our children are eating well and getting all the nutrients(营养)they need. Children need two or three kinds of vegetables every day.

A simple way to get children to eat vegetables is eating them ourselves. Following our habit, they may start eating vegetables. Don’t say things like, “If you eat your vegetables, you can have desserts(餐后甜食).” These methods work for a while but can possibly lead them to disliking vegetables more. Giving your children new varieties(多样性) which will help her or him develop a taste for trying new things.

Sometimes the simple things just don’t work. We have to start becoming a little creative when it comes to make our children eat these vegetables. By doing this in the beginning when they are small, it will hopefully help them learn to love vegetables.

Think of creative ways to make children eat vegetables. For example, cut up vegetables like carrots, tomatoes, and assemble (集合) a creative way on a plate for an afternoon snack. Or try using cheese sauce either by dipping(浸)vegetables or by putting the cheese right on top of the uncooked vegetables.

If you prefer, you can also add a teaspoon of sugar on top of cooked green beans and peas to give them a little sweeter taste. Doing this shouldn’t lead to a sweet tooth as long as you only give them a small amount.

If you have a child that refuses to eat vegetables, some of these suggestions I’ve listed will help to turn that around. In the end, you’re not just getting them to eat vegetables, you are helping them to live a healthier lifestyle.
