题目内容

Robert Frost is an American poet(诗人), who was born in 1874 in San Francisco, but spent most of his years in snowy places like Massachusetts. Most of his poems were about nature and the New England sights. Frost is known for creating simple poems in everyday English. He was big on sounds, often talking about how the sounds of words carry more meaning than the words themselves. His most famous poem is as follows:

Stopping by Woods on a Snowy Evening

Whose woods these are I think I know.

His house is in the village though;

He will not see me stopping here

To watch his woods fill up with snow.

My little horse must think it queer(古怪的)

To stop without a farmhouse near

Between the woods and frozen lake

The darkest evening of the year.

He gives his harness bells(佩铃)a shake

To ask if there is some mistake.

The only other sound’s the sweep

Of easy wind and downy flake(雪花).

The woods are lovely, dark and deep,

But I have promises to keep,

And miles to go before I sleep,

And miles to go before I sleep.

This poem was written in 1922, two years before Frost won the first of his four Pulitzer Prizes. The poem tells the story of a man traveling to a town, who is pretty much in love with what he sees, but can’t quite make himself leave the lovely and dark woods.
