Bblythe was doing a school project on children’s rights. She decided to surf the Internet for some information. Here is what she has found.

The United Nations lists the rights of children. Most countries agree with all of them, but some countries don’t. The following are some of the most important rights of children:

Children have the right to be properly fed, clothed and looked after by their family. If their family cannot do so, the government should take responsibility.

Children have the right to get education, development and medical care, which should be provided by the government.

Children mustn’t be tortured by their parents or others. They have had self-respect(自尊心).

Children have the right to expect the government to protect them from all kinds of hurt and neglect(疏忽).

No child under fifteen should be made to fight as a solider.

Children have the right to be protected from being made to work too hard to make money for other people.

In some countries children don’t have these rights. Many young children are made to work long hours in factories and on farms. In some countries there are so few schools that only rich children can get education. There aren’t enough doctors or nurses to help children when they’re sick, either.

The rights of children are the rights people think children should have. They’re not always the rights children really have.

David walked down the street. All he wanted to do was to play basketball with Jim. But his mother told him to return his sister's books to the library on his way to Jim's house.

In his eyes, books and summertime just don't go together. He thought he had read a lot during the school year. And he had never set foot inside a public library. Today he'd just drop the books off in the outside return box, but it was locked. He had to go inside to return them.

David walked inside the building a few minutes before closing time. He put the books into the return box. After a quick drink of water and a short stop in the toilet, he'd be on his way to meet Jim. He walked out of the toilet. The library lights were turned off. He was locked—in a library!

David tried to use the telephone, but he couldn't find one. As the sun began to set, he searched for a light and found a little one on a desk. He used a pencil to write a note on a big piece of paper. It read, “I'm locked inside. Please call for help.” He put it on the front door. Surely, someone passing by would see it. He then turned his attention to the library itself.

He was surprised to discover that this place was not so bad. Rows and rows of books! When he saw a book about Michael Jordan on the desk, he picked it up. He opened the book and began to read. He felt that being locked in the library didn't seem to be such a terrible thing.

May Day Basket

I clearly remember the May Day of the year that I was in fifth grade. That year I was faced with a challenge because of my best friend, Pam.

A new family recently had moved into our small town, and Pam was spending more and more time at their house. I felt ______ and left out.

When my mother asked me whether I would take a May Day basket to Pam’s house, I answered angrily, “Of course not!” My mother stopped what she was doing and ______ me in her arms. She told me that I would have many other friends in my lifetime.

“But Pam was my best friend ever,” I cried.

Mum told me that circumstances (环境) change and people change. She ______ that one of the great things friends can do is to give each other a chance to grow, to change and to develop into what they want to be. And sometimes, she said, that friends would ______ other people to spend time with. It’s nothing wrong with that.

She went on to say that I needed to forgive Pam for hurting me and that I could express that forgiveness (宽恕) by giving her a May Day basket.

It was a ______ decision, but I decided to give Pam a basket. I made an extra special basket of flowers with lots of yellow because that was Pam’s favorite ______. I asked my two sisters to help me deliver my basket of forgiveness. As we ______ from our hiding place, Pam picked up the flowers, pressed her face into them and said ______ enough for us to hear, “Thank you, Susie, I hoped you wouldn’t forget me!”

That day, I made a decision that changed my life: I decided to hold my friends in my heart, but not in my expectation of them, allowing them space to grow and to change – with or without me.
