     In July 2001, Zhang Jian, a 37-year-old swimmer landed in Calais, France after swimming for twelve
hours. He became the first Chinese ever to cross the English Channel. The 33.8-kilometre channel has
attracted many swimmers because it is one of the most difficult to cross.
