Reading is a good habit, but the problem is, there's too much to read these days, and too little time to read every word of it. (83) There are hundreds of skills to help you read more in less time. Here are two skills that I think are especially good.
Preview--if it's long and hard. Previewing is especially useful for getting a general idea of heavy reading like long magazine articles and business reports.
Here's how to preview.
●Read the first two paragraphs and the last two paragraphs carefully.
●Then read only the first sentence of the other paragraphs.
Previewing doesn't give you all the details. (84) It keeps you from spending time on things you don't really want--or need--to read.
Skim--if it's short and simple. Skimming is a good way to get a general idea of light reading --like popular magazines or the sports and entertainment of your daily paper.
Here's how to skim.
●Get your eyes to move fast. Sweep them across each line.
●Pick up only a few key words in each line.
Everybody skims differently. You and I may not pick up the same words when we skim the same piece, but we'll get a similar idea of what it's all about.

How to be a good detective(侦探)

Have you seen the Hollywood movie Sherlock Holmes? Holmes is a character created by British writer Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. His books were so popular that Holmes soon became “the most famous detective in the world”. In this movie, this great detective faces a dangerous man, Lord Blackwood. Together with his best friend Dr Watson, Holmes stops Blackwood’s plan to control the world with black “magic”.
Most of us are not as smart as Holmes. But we can also work out mysteries on our own. All we have to do is to follow some simple rules.
小题1: No matter how smart he or she is, the most important quality for a detective is being good. In the movie, Lord Blackwood and Sherlock Holmes are both very smart. The difference is that Lord Blackwood is a bad man and he does bad things. Holmes can beat him on the side of justice (正义).
小题2: Every bad man tries to cover up what he did. But not all things can be covered up easily. A good detective can discover clues hidden at crime scenes with sharp eyes. For example, Holmes can simply look at a man’s footprints and quickly find out his personal information like age and habits.
小题3:Even though Holmes has knowledge about many subjects , such as chemistry, botany (植物学) and anatomy, he still needs Dr Watson’s help to fight with him. We should also have someone to help you, especially if you don’t know as much as Holmes.
小题4: A good detective never jumps to conclusions. When all the necessary clues are put together, you’d better think carefully. If you can’t work it out, don’t be afraid. Just take a deep breath and concentrate on thinking. Logic can help you discover missing clues.

A.Have sharp eyes.
B.Logic (逻辑) is the key.
C.A good assistant is a great help.
D.Justice is most important.
小题5:Holmes is a character created by _______.
A.Lord BlackwoodB.Sir Arthur DoyleC.Dr WatsonD.Charles Dickens
Answer the questions(根据短文内容回答下列问题)
How much pocket money do you get? How do you spend it? The Blue Book of Chinese Teenager Financial(金融的) Study shows that social activities now take up more of teenagers’ spending. The book was about teenagers’ spending habits. It was based on studies in nine cities in China, such as Beijing, Shanghai and Guangzhou. The results show that students are spending more and more on their relationships with friends and classmates, such as having meals together and buying birthday gifts. Only one-third of high school students think about the price when choosing gifts. Most say they only care about what their friends like.
Xiao Hao, 17, a student at Gaoyou Normal School in Jiangsu, spent more than 1,000 yuan on his birthday meal this February. “They had given me gifts. If I hadn’t done anything in return, I’d have lost face,” Xia said.
Xia’s experience is quite usual among the young students. A meal can cost a student’s pocket money for a month. Many just ask more from parents when they use up their money.
Zhang Wei, an expert on teenagers’ financial study, suggested that teenagers should learn to make a budget. A budget is a plan of how money will be spent. It helps make decisions about money. To make good use of your money, you can also set a limit. Learn to balance your wants and needs. When choosing gifts for friends, let them know that you care. Sometimes a handmade gift is much better than an expensive one.

Good morning, boys and girls. Today I’ll talk about going online.
We know that there are too many Net bars(网吧)around us. The Internet makes our lives interesting. Many of us like going online very much because we can learn how to use the computer. We can learn English and read some newspapers and magazines to know more information around us. It can make us clever in playing computer games. Also when we send e-mails to our friends, they can get them at once. It can help us keep in touch with people from all over the world.
But some students spend too much time in playing computer games and some stay in the Net bars all day and all night. It takes them too much time to chat online so they do worse in their lessons and they don’t study well any more. I think we mustn’t get online when it is time for us to study. We can do it in summer or winter holidays. I think we should get online with our teachers or parents.
At the same time, if we have lots of free time, we can do some activities after school. We usually have activities from 4:50 to 5:50 in the afternoon. We can play basketball or football. We also have some interest groups in school, such as drawing, singing and dancing. We can go to the English corner on Monday afternoon. I hope we can spend more time on our subjects or on such activities that we can learn a lot from and less time on the Internet.
That’s all! Thank you.

My mother used to ask me what is the most important part of the body. Through the years I would guess at what I thought was the correct answer.
When I was younger, I thought sound was very important to us as humans, so I said, “My ears, Mommy.”
She said, “No. Many people are deaf. But you keep thinking about it and I will ask you again soon.”
Several years passed before she asked me again. Since making my first attempt, I had thought about the correct answer. So this time I told her, “Mommy, sight is very important to everybody, so it must be our eyes.”
She looked at me and told me, “You are learning first, but the answer is not correct because there are many people who are blind.”
Then last year, my grandpa died. Everybody was crying. Mom looked at me when it was our turn to say our final good-bye to Grandpa. She asked me, “Do you know the most important body part yet, my dear?”
I was shocked when she asked me this now. I always thought this was a game between her and me. She said, “This question is very important. It shows that you have really lived your life.” I saw her eyes well up with tears. She said, “My dear, the most important body part is your shoulder.”
I asked, “Is it because it holds up your head?”
She replied, “No, it is because it can hold the head of a friend or loved one when they cry. Everybody needs a shoulder to cry on sometimes in life, my dear. I only hope that you have enough love and friends that you will have a shoulder to cry on when you need it.”
From then on, I knew the most important body part is not a selfish one. It is sympathetic(有同情心的) to the pain of others.
