题目内容
In an American classroom, a Chinese girl was asked to answer a question. She stood up and smiled, without making any sound. The American teacher looked at himself and didn’t see anything funny. So he asked her the question again. The girl just smiled but said nothing. The teacher was angry. He didn’t know that the girl smiled to cover her embarrassment(尴尬)because she wasn’t able to answer the question.
In a dining room in Beijing, an Englishman was careless and dropped a plate. The Chinese who had seen this began to laugh. The Englishman felt uncomfortable and even got angry. “They are laughing at me,” he thought. In fact the Chinese laughed not at the Englishman or his bad luck—whether he is a foreigner or a Chinese. The smile or laughter has several feelings: don’t take it so seriously; laugh it off, it’s nothing; such things can happen to any of us.

One of the most common questions I am asked is whether, when, and how to follow up after a job interview. Following up in some way is necessary. Yes, you can get a job without it, but if you compete (竞争) with other top candidates (候选人), following up can sometimes help you when the other candidate doesn’t. Here’s how to follow up well:
Send a thank-you note at once. E-mail is fine for this and has the advantage of arriving faster, but handwritten notes are still appreciated (欣赏). And if there are many interviews, send a thank-you note each time.
Find out their timeline. Hopefully, you asked about their timeline in the interview itself, but if you didn’t, follow up within a week to strengthen (强化) your interest and politely ask what they expect their timeline for a decision to be.
Be patient. Most commonly, job seekers are too worried about the result. It doesn’t look worried to express your interest in the job or check in to ask about the timeline.
Don’t be nervous if you don’t hear from them at once. The hiring process (招聘过程) often takes longer than a candidate would like, maybe the decision makers are out of town. If you’re past the time they indicated you would hear something, this isn’t necessarily cause for nervousness. Hiring often ends up taking longer than expected. Just politely follow up, explain you’re very interested but understand that hiring can take time, and ask if they have the latest timeline.

Many companies use guards and expensive alarm systems to protect their property (财产). Soon a new kind of protection will be used—robots. Engineers have been working on the first mobile robots for businesses. The robots will guard factories, warehouses (仓库) and museums at night.
The mobile robots will move around slowly on wheels. They will be able to detect (察觉,发现) people through walls and pick up sounds, such as breaking glass. They can be fixed with loud sirens to frighten thieves, or radios to signal police or guards.
To protect a building, a robot will have to move around without knocking into the walls. Information about the building will have to be stored in the robot’s small, built-in computer. A floor map could be programmed into the computer’s memory, for example.
A mobile robot will not be able to do everything. Unlike human guards, it will not be able to climb stairs, open doors, or move along rough ground. It won’t be able to tell the difference between friends and enemies. Because of that, people will have to be prevented from entering the area it moves.
One kind of mobile robot will be able to “sense” whether a chair or a box has been moved and go around it. This robot will also judge size well enough so that it won’t send an alarm if a cat crosses the room. And if someone tries to steal this robot, it will sound a loud, painful siren. The three-foot-tall robot is hard to be stolen anyway. It weighs about 200 pounds.
U.S. companies pay almost $10 billion a year to protect their property with alarm systems and human guards. Mobile robots may be cheaper. (296)

Mary picked up a pencil and a piece of paper, saying,“Now,you want to earn money for the autumn camping trip, right?” Tom,her brother, nodded. He wasn’t able to go last year because he hadn’t earned enough money during the summer. This year he came up with a plan.
He made a necklace for his mother that everyone admired. They were surprised to learn that Tom had made it for her.Why not make more necklaces and sell them?
“OK,” said Mary,“The first thing you need to do is to figure out(计算)how much you have now.’’
“I have $20.00 in the bank, and $7.25 in my room,” explained Tom.
“That gives you a total of $27.25,” said Mary,“That is called your capital. The next thing you need to know is how much it will cost you to make each necklace.”
“Well, the pet shop will give me all the feathers the birds lose.I'll have to buy the beads(小珠子)and string,” said Tom.
Mary wrote on the piece of paper:
CAPITAL $27.25
EXPENSES Feathers no cost
String for 10 necklaces $ 2.50
Beads for 10 necklaces + $ 15.00
Total $ 17.50
“How much do you think you can sell such a necklace for?” asked Mary.
“Hmm,” Tom looked thoughtful and said,“There's a shop in town that sells almost the same kind of necklace for $ 7.50.If I charge(要价)$ 6.00,people will think that's a bargain.”
“OK.If you sell each necklace for $ 6.00,you'll make a good profit(利润)on each then,” said Mary.
“Hurray!” Tom cried,“If I sell 20 necklaces,I'll have enough from the profit for the camping trip and $10.00 left over.”
