We talk every day. When we have good news, we like to share it with our good friends and when something terrible happens, we make it known to others soon. But can you imagine that a tree can talk and share hews too? Of course, no tree moves lips and says words just as people do. Strange as it may sound, though, some trees do manage to communicate with each other.
Willow(柳树) trees are the best-known of these trees. When insects(昆虫) begin nibbling(叮咬) a willow tree, the tree sends out a special smell at once. This smell tells the other willows that harmful insects are coming near. All of them quickly make a chemical(化学物质) in their leaves. This chemical is bad to the insects. The insects do not like it and they fly away soon. In this way, the willow trees protect themselves from the insects.
The next time when you take a walk in the woods, maybe the trees are “talking” to each other quietly. And when someone says that trees cannot “talk”, please tell them that even trees give messages to each other, too.

If you think you’re too shy and want to be a little bit brave, try the following:
You can make it. Tell people you’re shy. There’s no need to hide it. When they get to know you’re a shy kid, they’ll understand you better. This also helps you feel more relaxed in talks.
Try to smile more. When you smile, people think you’re friendly and easy to talk to. Remember that other people have feelings too and most people will stay away from an angry-looking face.
Learn to be a good talker. If you find it hard to start talks, say something nice about people around you. Think about how great you feel when someone says something nice to you. Doesn’t it make you want to keep talking to that person?
Get your attention elsewhere(在别处). Think more about ways to enjoy parties or games. Don’t waste time worrying about your look or whether people like you or not.
Take one small step at a time. Each time when you say “Hi” or smile at someone, say to yourself “You did it”. Keep trying and one day you’ll never feel shy when you talk about yourself.

American people like to say “Thank you” when others help them or say something kind to them. People of many countries do so, too. It is a very good habit(习惯).
You should say “Thank you” when someone passes you the salt on the table, when someone walking ahead of you keeps the door open for you, when someone says you have done your work well, or you have bought a nice thing, or your city is very beautiful. “Think you” is used not only between friends, but also between parents and children, brothers and sisters.
“Excuse me” is another short sentence they use. When you hear someone say so behind you, you know that somebody wants to walk past you without touching you. It’s not polite to break others when they are talking. If you want to speak to one of them, say “Excuse me” first, and then begin talking. One day, I heard an American boy say to a Chinese girl student, “You speak very good English.” But the girl answered, “No, no. My English is very poor.” The foreigner was quite   16    at the answer. Thinking he had not made    17    understood or the girl had not   18    him clearly, he said, “Yes, indeed, you speak very well.”   19    the girl still kept saying, “No.” In the end the American boy could not understand and didn’t know   20    to say.

What’s wrong with the girl’s answer? She didn’t   21   a compliment (恭维) in the same way as the American people do. She should answer, “Thank you” instead of “No”. She   22   understood what the American boy had said, but she thought she should be modest. In the   23   , people will feel proud and  24    when they are praised . So if someone says the   25    you have cooked are very delicious, you should say, “Thank you.”

In our country we think being modest is a virtue (美德) and being proud is a bad thing , but in my opinion, being confident does not   26   being proud, so sometimes you should be confident   27   being modest.

28   you are modest and say, “No, I’m afraid I can’t do it well”, while working in a western country, the others may think that you really cannot do it. If you often say “No”, you will certainly be looked down upon by   29  . When asking for a job, if one says something like “Yes, I can certainly do it” instead of “Let me have a try”, he or she will   30    get it. So in the west, you should be brave to show your self-confidence.
