       Dogs are friends of man. They work for us. They hunt (狩猎) with us. They play with us. But once,
all over the world, dogs are wild (野生的).
       Dogs go back to the Stoen Age. All dogs had the same ancestor(祖先). It is believed that this
ancestor was much like a wolf (狼). Other animals like the fox, came from this ancestor, too.
       Thousands of years ago, man began to tame (驯服)the wild dogs . When the dogs were tame, they
were trained (训练). The strong dogs became working animals . They were trained to pull heavy loads
(担子). They learned to keep watch over the sheep and other animals. Working dogs had other jobs, too.
       Some dogs were not strong. But they could help man hunt for game. Other dogs were best as pets.
       At first , there were only a few kinds of dogs. Today there are more than 100 kinds.

  It isn't strictly true that one half of the world is rich and the other half is poor. It is one-third that is very rich and two-thirds that are very poor.

  People in the rich countries don't understand the great difference between them and those in the poorer countries. A very simple example is that a dog or a cat in north America eats better than a child in the poorer countries. It was Sunday and Tom was staying home. After breakfast he went out into the garden and played quietly by himself. There were no kids around and he was used to playing alone quietly. He played with Bobby, the dog. He climbed up and down the trees. Sometimes a bird would come down to perch(停歇)on top of the doghouse.

Then Tom would have the greatest fun by throwing a stone or something at it. Though he never made it, he did like doing this kind of things.

Now Tom had been in the garden for half an hour. Suddenly a crack(碎裂声)was heard and the little boy began crying.

“What’s the matter, Tom?” his mother looked through the kitchen window.

Tom ran into the kitchen.

“Mum,” he sobbed(抽泣), “I broke Bobby’s plate. I didn’t know it was so fragile(易碎的).”
