Spending time in a foreign country is an exciting and life-changing experience. You see different scenery, taste exotic (异国的) food and meet people with various backgrounds. And the most important thing of all, you explore and even become a part of the local culture.

Your stereotypes (成见) are broken down. You find French people are not always “romantic”. Americans don’t eat McDonalds all the time. And you won’t get malaria (疟疾) from a mosquito (蚊子) bite in Africa.

However, culture shock may hit you. Things you take for granted (想当然) at home may no longer be that way in a foreign country. Not every body thinks like you or does things the way you’ve always done. Their tea tastes different. They don’t talk excitedly in restaurants. Some people do not care much about your life, so you may even feel they are a little cold. It is not better or worse. It is just different. What you can do is to take in the differences, while trying to be respectful and humble (谦虚的). You open up your mind a little more each time, you become a better person.
