The great pyramids(金字塔) of Egypt were built more than 4,000 years ago as tombs(坟墓) for the

kings of that time.In ancient Egypt(古埃及), people believed that when the kings died they became gods in the next life.

To be able to do this, the kings needed their bodies. So their bodies were kept and placed somewhere safe when they died. These kept bodies were called mummies(木乃伊).

The Egyptians thought that pyramids would be a safe place to put the mummies of the kings. They believed that placing the mummies in pyramids would help them to reach heaven, where they would make their new home.
