A study led by the Barcelona Institute for Global Health shows for the first time that exposure(接触)to green space during childhood may have beneficial(有益的)effects on brain development.

The study was performed among 253 schoolchildren from the BREATHE project in Barcelona (Spain). Lifelong exposure to green space in the living places was recorded—using the satellite—based information on the children's addresses from birth up through to the time of the study. Brain structure was studied using 3D MRI(核磁共振图像). Working memory and inattentiveness were graded with computers.

The primary schoolchildren who have been raised in homes surrounded by more greenspace tend to present with larger volumes of white and grey matter in certain areas of the brain. These differences are connected with beneficial effects on cognitive function(认知功能). Moreover, larger volumes of white and grey matter might lead to better working memory and less inattentiveness.

"This is the first study that shows the connection between long—term exposure to green space and brain structure." Says, the leading researcher of the study, "Our findings suggest that exposure to green space early in life could result in beneficial structural changes in the brain. It also shows the lasting effects of early life exposure to greenness on our health."

This study also suggests that it is beneficial to increase greenness in cities. Green space can provide children with chances for psychological restoration(心理康复)and prompt important exercises in discovery, creativity and risk taking. These exercises in turn positively(肯定地)influence different aspects of brain development. What's more, greener areas often have lower levels of air pollution, which could bring indirect benefits for brain development.

Anyway, further studies are needed to prove the findings in other populations, settings and climates. And researchers need to examine differences according to the nature and quality of green space.

When the “energy” reaches a certain level, some organizations(组织) and companies will plant a real tree in a desert(沙漠) area of China. And now it seems that our country has made the world a greener place for people all over the world.

A study by NASA(美国航空航天局) in February showed that China and India have made the Earth greener over the past two years. The study has found that since 2000 the Earth's green leaf area has increased(增加) by over 5 million square kilometers. That's the same size as the total area of the Amazon(亚马逊) rainforest. It is mostly the result of big tree-planting programs in China and intensive agriculture(集约化农业) in both countries, according to NASA.

“China and India have only 9% of the planet's land area covered in vegetation(陆地植被面积), but they did one third of the increased greening for the whole world." Chi Chen, the study's lead author(作者) and a researcher(研究员)at Boston University, US, told CNN(美国有线电视新闻网). China was the major contributor(主要贡献者), adding 25% to this increase, while India added 6.8%.

Over the past ten years, China has done something great to green the land. In 1978, China began a national forestation project(植树造林工程). It is also known as the“Great Green Wall". The program has seen many trees planted in thirteen provinces in northern China to act as windbreaks, according to China Daily.

With China's success in dealing with forestation, the United Nations Environment Program (UNEP联合国环境规划署) believes China is a good example for others to follow.“China is one of the most successful countries in greening the desert and has lessons to share with the world," UNEP Executive Director Erik Solheim(执行主任埃里克索尔海)told Xinhua.
