People often say that the world is getting smaller. By this, they mean that with improved communications and trade, many countries are becoming more and more familiar with one another. There seems to be a lot of truth to this. After all, you can buy African food in Norway, or watch a French movie in China.
But countries still have the power to shock(震惊) people who visit them for the first time. For many of us, there are still real differences in the culture and habits of different nations.
The Daily Mail once reported on culture shock(文化差异) incidents(事件) from around the world. A Serbian student, Milorad Boti, was surprised while on a school trip to Germany when he found that public bathrooms were very different from those in his home country. He noticed that after using the toilet, the lid (盖子) rotated (旋转) as part of the toilet’s cleaning process. Milorad was impressed. “That was the best thing that happened on that school trip," he said.
Most often, however, it's eating habits that are different between cultures. The Daily Mail article mentioned the shock of an Indian man, Kaushal Barot. When visiting a Western country, he noticed people communicating in restaurants, often spending hours in them with friends. Kaushal was surprised because in India, restaurants are for one thing only: eating.
The cultural differences people notice can seem positive, negative, or simply just strange. But rather than something to be feared, these differences should be welcomed. 【题目】 Nowadays, many non-native（非母语的）Chinese speakers are working hard to learn Chinese and pass the HSK that is the official(官方的) test for non-native Chinese speakers. Passing it can give non-native speakers new work or education chances. HSK has been offered since 1992. Each of the exam’s six levels includes three parts: listening, grammar practice and reading. In 2018, the HSK was taken 6,800,000 times, up to 4.6 percent from 2017.
Schools in countries around the world are starting to offer more Chinese language courses. That’s because trade and cultural exchanges between China and other countries are going on to increase.
For example, the Zambia(赞比亚) government will offer Putonghua classes in over 1,000 middle schools starting in 2021. It will be the largest Chinese language courses in Africa. Zambia will become the fourth country in Africa to offer Chinese language courses in its schools.
