No matter who you are or where you come from, one thing is certain:you are familiar to the mosquito, although you probably wish you weren't.Mosquitoes are everywhere. They can be found all over the world, and they come in more than 2,500 species(种).Somewhere, at some time, you have surely met at least one.

No one loves the mosquito. But unfortunately, the mosquito may decide who she loves. She?Yes, she.Do you know that only the female mosquito bites?Well, it's true. And it's not because she is unfriendly; she needs blood to reproduce.Do you know how the female mosquito decides whom to bite? She is quite selective, and she chooses her victims(猎物)carefully.First, she uses sensors to find her victim. These sensors are located on her two antennae(触角)and her three pairs of legs. With these sensors, she tests your body moisture, body warmth, and chemical substances in your sweat. If she likes what she finds, she bites. But if you are not attractive, she'll reject you for another one.The next time a mosquito bites you, just remember that you are chosen. You are special.

If the mosquito likes you, she settles onto your flesh very gently, and she breaks your skin with her long nose tip.Long nose tip? What's that? It's a kind of mouth and it sticks out just below the mosquito's eyes.It contains six sharp instruments called stylets. She thrusts all six stylets into your skin at once, and if she hits a blood pipe, she'll get a full dinner in about a minute. All this usually takes place so quickly and quietly that you may not have doubted anything is happening.

Why does a mosquito bite itch(痒)?The itch is not really from the bite. It's from the saliva(口水)the mosquito mixes with your blood to keep it from being blocked as she sucks up her long nose tip.By the time the itch begins, she has gone.

And then what happens?Well after her delicious dinner, the mosquito is tired. She just wants to find a place to rest.Heavy with your blood, she picks a spot on a leaf, a wall or a stone to quietly lay her eggs.Just one drop of blood will produce hundreds of eggs.

根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。

It doesn't come as a surprise to you to realize that it makes no difference what you read or study if you can't remember it.You just waste your valuable time. 71 One dependable aid that does help you remember what you study is to have a specific purpose or reason for reading.

Why does a clerk in a store go away when your reply to her offer to help is, "No, thank you.I'm just looking."? Both you and she know that if you aren't sure what you want, you are not likely to find it.But suppose you say instead, "Yes, thank you.I want a pair of sun glasses." She says, "Right this way, please."

__72_ If you choose a book, "just looking" for nothing in particular, you are likely to get just that—nothing. But if you do know what you want, you are almost sure to get it.Your reasons will vary; they will include reading or studying "to find out more about", "to understand the reasons for" and "to find out how".

__73__ Before you start to study, you say to yourself something like this, "I want to know why Stephen Vincent Benet happened to write about America".Because you know why you are reading or studying, you relate the information to your purpose and remember it better.

74 At least two important processes go on at the same time.As you read, you take in ideas rapidly and accurately. But at the same time you express your own ideas to yourself as you react to what you read. You have a kind of mental conversation with the author.

This additional process of thinking about what you read includes evaluating it, relating it to what you already know, and using it for your own purposes.__75__ One part of critical reading, as you have discovered, is distinguishing between facts and opinions.Facts can be checked by evidence, Opinions are one's own personal reactions.Another part of critical reading is judging sources.Still another part is drawing accurate inferences.

A.Maybe you have already discovered some clever ways to keep yourself from forgetting.

B.It is important for students to have a positive attitude to their study.

C.You remember better when you know what you' re reading.

D.In other words, a good reader is a critical reader.

E.It’s quite the same with your studying.

F.Reading is not one single activity.

G.This is the way it works.

You have seen the moon many times. Does it look large or small? Does it look near or far away?

When you see the moon from the earth, the moon looks small. The moon is really very large, but not as large as the earth. It is much larger than the largest mountain on the earth.

Why does the moon look small when you see it from the earth?

The moon is very far away from the earth.

Things that are far away from you look smaller than things that are close.

Which looks smaller, the moon or the tree?

The moon looks smaller, even though it is really much larger than a tree. It looks smaller because it is far away from you and the tree is close to you.

  What is moonlight?

You can see the sun and the stars in the sky. They give off light. The moon does not give off any light of its own. How then can you see the moon at night?

Light from the sun shines on the moon. Some of this light reaches the earth from the moon. The moon reflects (反射) sunlight, which now can be called moonlight.

How is light reflected? You can see how light is reflected if you hold a mirror in the sun. The mirror will reflect some sunlight.

The moon is something like a mirror. It reflects the light of the sun.

If you see light shining on the ball, half of the ball is in the light and the other half is dark.

The sun shines all the time. However, it shines on only half of the moon at a time. Like the earth, half of the moon is in sunlight. The other half is dark.

What part of the moon can you see? The only part of the moon you can see is the part that is in sunlight.

One day Burton took his children to the zoo. He told them to be ready at two o'clock, but they weren't all ready. Little Tommy could not find his shoes. He could find his brown shoes, but he couldn't find his black shoes, and he wanted to wear his black shoes to the zoo. At a quarter past two his brothers and sisters asked him to wear his brown shoes, so be put them on; and at last they were all ready to leave. Their mother waved goodbye and told them to enjoy their trip to the zoo. Then she sat down to read a book in the empty quiet house.

When they got to the zoo, Burton told the children to stay with him; he didn't want them to get lost in the zoo. Little Tommy asked his father to buy some food for the bears, but his father answered, “Look at that notice, Tommy. It tells us not to feed the animals.”

“Why does it tell us not to feed the animals?” asked Tommy.

“Because they get a lot of food already,” said Burton, “and people often try to give them the wrong food; that's bad for the animals.”

At three o'clock the dolphin(海豚)show began. All the Burtons wanted to see it, so Mr Burton bought seven tickets and took the children down to the dolphinarium(海豚馆). The dolphins did a lot of tricks:they jumped up into the air and flew through hoops(大铁圈)over the water; they caught rubber rings with their noses; and they played “basketball” with red and yellow balls. The trainer blew his whistle when he wanted the dolphins to do something, and when they did it he gave them some fish.

“How can the dolphins do all these tricks? ”asked little Tommy.

“Because they are very intelligent(聪明的),”said his elder brother. “They can understand when their trainer tells them to do something; and they like to do tricks(耍把戏)because their trainer always gives them some fish when they do them .”

“That's good,” said Tommy. “I like to do tricks, too. Why doesn't Father give me some candies(糖果)when I do them?”

Below is a selection from a popular science book.

If blood is red, why are veins(静脉)blue?

Actually, veins are not blue at all. They are more of a clear, yellowish colour.Although blood looks red when it's outside the body, when it's sitting in a vein near the surface of the skin, it's more of a dark reddish purple colour. At the right depth, these blood-filled veins reflect less red light than the surrounding skin, making them look blue by comparison.

Which works harder, your heart or your brain?

That kind of depends on whether you are busy thinking or busy exercising.Your heart works up to three times harder during exercise, and shifts enough blood over a lifetime to fill a supertanker. But, in the long run, your brain probably tips it, because even when you're sitting still your brain is using twice as much energy as your heart, and it takes four to five tunes as much blood to feed it.

Why do teeth fall out, and why don't they grow back in grown-ups?

Baby(or "milk")teeth do not last long; they fall out to make room for bigger, stronger adult teeth later on.Adult teeth fall out when they become damaged, decayed and infected by bacteria.Once this second set of teeth has grown in, you're done. When they're gone, they're gone. This is because nature figures you're set for life, and what controls regrowth of your teeth switches off.

Do old people shrink as they age?

Yes and do.Many people do get shorter as they age. But, when they do, it isn't because they're shrinking all over. They simply lose height as their spine(脊柱)becomes shorter and more curved due to disuse and the effects, of gravity(重力).Many(but not all)men and women do lose height as they get older.Men lose an average of 3-4 cm in height as they age, while women may lose 5 cm or more.If you live to be 200 years old, would you keep shrinking till you were, like 60 cm tall, like a little boy again? No, because old people don't really shrink! It is not that they are

growing backwards-their legs, arms and backbones getting shorter. When they do get shorter, it's because the spine has shortened a little.Or, more often, become more bait and curved.

Why does spinning make you dizzy(眩晕的)?

Because your brain gets confused between what you're seeing and what you're feeling. The brain senses that you're spinning using special gravity-and-motion-sensing organs in your inner ear, which work together with your eyes to keep your vision and balance stable. But when you suddenly stop spinning the system goes out of control, and your brain thinks you're moving while you're Dot!

Where do feelings and emotions come from?

Mostly from an ancient part of the brain called the limbic system. All mammals have this brain area-from mice to dogs, cats, and humans. So all mammals feel basic emotions like fear, pain and pleasure. But since human feelings also involve other, newer bits of the brain, we feel more complex emotions than any other animal on the planet.

If exercise wears you out, how can it be good for you?

Because our bodies adapt to everything we do to them. And as far as your body is concerned, it's "use it, or lost it”! It's not that exercise makes you healthy; it's more that a lack of exercise leaves your body weak and easily affected by disease.
