In the Ituri forest of America live many tribes(部落), one of which is Pygmy. Most of the Pygmies in the tribe are not taller than four feet. They weigh only about eighty pounds each.

In spite of their small size, they are the best hunters among all the jungle people. Even the great elephant can be caught by them. They can shoot three or four arrows so rapidly that often the last one Leaves the bow before the first has hit its mark. If an arrow should miss its aim, the impatient Pygmy may become very angry, breaking his arrows and stepping on them.

Since they do not plant any crops, Pygmies are constantly moving around. They seldom sleep in one camp for more than a few days. In their camps there is not furniture at all except for some weapons such as spears, bows and arrows. There are no cooking pots either. Food is eaten uncooked or smoked over a fire. So when the tribe moves to a new camp there is nothing to carry except these weapons and babies too small to walk.

Pygmies can move on the tree tops almost as skillfully as monkeys. Often they travel great distances through the branches without touching the ground.

One of the surprising facts about these small men and women is their great appetite(食欲). A Pygmy can eat up sixty bananas at a single meal besides quantities of meat. After eating, they will lie on their hard earth bed and groan(呻吟)in all night. But in the morning, they are ready to eat the same amount of food or fight among themselves.

阅读下列短文,从每题所给的四个选项中选出最佳选项。

In the Caucasus Mountains of Russia, nearly fifty out of every one hundred thousand people live to celebrate their hundredth birthday, and many don't stop at 100! By comparison, in America only three in one hundred thousand people reach 100.But these Russian old people aren't alone. The Pakistanis, who live in the Himalaya Mountains and the Ecuadorans of the Andes Mountains, seem to share the secret of long life, too. These people remain healthy in body and spirit in spite of the passage of time. While many persons in industrial societies become weak and ill in their 60s and 70s, some Caucasians, aged 110 to 140, work in the fields beside their great grandchildren.Even the idea of aging is foreign to them. When asked, “at what age does youth end?” most of these old people had no answer.Several replied, “well perhaps at the age of 80, ” and the very youngest estimate was at the age of 60.

What accounts for this ability to survive to such an old age, and to survive so well? First of all, hard physical work is a way of life for all these long-lived people. They begin their long days of physical labor as children and never seem to stop.

All these people get healthful rewards from the environment in which they work. They all come from mountainous regions. This reduced-oxygen environment makes the heart and blood vessel system stronger.

Another factor that may contribute to the good health of these people is their isolation. To a great extent, they are separated from the pressures and worries of industrial society.Inherited(遗传的)factors also play some role.

It is clear that isolation from urban pressures and pollution, clean mountain air, daily hard work, moderate diets, good genes, and a youthful approach to life all contribute to the health and long life of all these people.

(1)

Why does the writer mention some long-lived people in the first paragraph?

[ ]

A.

To introduce the subject of the article.

B.

To surprise his readers.

C.

To tell you the difference between people in the Soviet Union and America.

D.

To tell you why Americans don't live as long as other people.

(2)

From the writer's viewpoint, industrial society ________.

[ ]

A.

is highly developed and beneficial to people

B.

is a great advance in human history

C.

is full of pressures and therefore bad for people's health

D.

can make people's life better and better

(3)

Which of the following is true according to the passage?

[ ]

A.

It is beneficial for people to work and live in industrial society.

B.

People should relax themselves from high pressures of life in industrial society.

C.

The more hard physical work you do, the more healthy you will be.

D.

People's health mainly depends on inherited factors.

(4)

The following factors except ________ contribute to the health and long life of all these people.

[ ]

A.

clean mountain air

B.

daily hard work

C.

good genes

D.

stress and pressure

In the early days of America, the family held together for economic reasons. Father, mother and children all worked together to build the pioneer family or family business. But today, about one out of three marriages ends in divorce, and more and more of them involve children. The divorce rate in America is still the highest in the world, but 75% of the women and 83% of the men who divorce remarry within 3 years. The children from the broken families join up to produce a new kind of unit called the blended family. But 18 million children are now living with their stepbrothers and stepsisters in such an arrangement.

Perhaps the most significant trend today is toward the single-parent household. Of all children under 18, 17% are now living with only one parent. More divorced men feel that they are capable of bringing up their children and are fighting for custody rights. John Wilcox, who has recently won custody of his two little girls, believes he's doing a good job in raising his kids in spite of the rising cost of it.

Business and government officials are looking for new ways to help parents meet their family responsibilities as well as to increase their income. One of them is to increase government support for nationwide day-care centers which allow single parents to find full-time jobs. Clearly enough, this hardly seems enough.

1.How many marriages end in divorce in the USA?

[ ]

A.33%.
B.17%.
C.75%.
D.83%.

2.If you have a stepbrother, one of your parents must have ________.

[ ]

A.died
B.been taken ill
C.remarried
D.been out of work

3.By “custody rights” (Para. 2), the author means the rights to ________.

[ ]

A.have a good job
B.obtain a divorce
C.bring up one's children
D.live with one's children

4.It can be inferred from what John Wilcox believes that ________.

[ ]

A.he is not sure of bringing up his children all by himself

B.he is not sure of taking good care of his children because of the rising cost

C.he is sure that he is able to raise his children as most mothers do

D.he is sure that he can get a good job and take good care of his children
