The secret of success

Since 1989, Dave Thomas, who died at age 69,was one of the most recognizable faces on TV. He appeared more than 800 commercials for the hamburger chain named for his daughter. "As long  as it works,” he said in 1991,"I'll continue to do those commercials."

Even though he was successful,Thomas remained troubled by his childhood. "He still won't let anyone see his feet, which are out of shape because he has never had proper-fitting shoes,” Wendy said in 1993 and told us that sixty-one years ago,Dave Thomas was born to a single mother, he was adopted as a baby by Rex and Auleva, Thomas of Kalamazoo in Michigan when he was six weeks old. After Auleva died when he was 5,Thomas spent years on the road as Rex traveled around seeking construction work. "He fed me," Thomas said, "and if I got out of line,he'd beat me." "When I found out I was (adopted),  I didn't want to talk about it,and as I talked to people I grew older… I got really a lot of encouragement" When he was 12 years old, Thomas started working at a barbecue(烧烤)restaurant in Knoxville,Tenne. Moving out on his own at 15, Thomas worked, first as a waiter, in many restaurants. But he had something much better in mind. “I thought if I owned a restaurant,” he said,"I could eat for free." When he was 24, meeting with Harland Sanders who led Thomas to a career as a manager of a Kentucky Fried Chicken restaurant ,where he became a millionaire in 1968.

A year later, after breaking with Sanders, Thomas started the first Wendy's Old Fashioned Hamburgers,in Columbus,Ohio, which set itself apart by serving made-to-order burgers. With

6,000 restaurants worldwide, the chain now makes $ 6 billion a year in sales. Although troubled by his own experience with an adoption,Thomas, married since 1954 to Lorraine, 66, and with four grown kids besides Wendy, felt it could offer a future for other children. He started the Dave Thomas Foundation for adoption in 1992. Later,Thomas, who had left school at 15,graduated from Coconut Great High School in Florida. He even took Lorraine to the graduation dance party. The kids voted him "Most likely to succeed". Thomas is survived by his wife of 47 years,Lorraine, five children and 16 grandchildren. His foundation helps raise awareness for the 134000 foster(收养的) children available for adoption, and helps make adoption more affordable. "The Dave you saw on TV was the real Dave," said his friend Pat Williams. "He wasn't a great actor or a great speaker." He was just Joe for everybody."

The people who built Stonehenge in Southern England thousands of years ago had wild parties, eating barbecued pigs and breaking pottery. This is according to recent work by archaeologists--history experts who investigate how human beings lived in the past.

Archaeologists digging near Stonehenge last year discovered the remains of a large prehistoric village where they think the builders of the mysterious stone circle used to live. The village is about 4,600 years old, the same age as Stonehenge and as old as the Pyramids in Egypt. It is less than two miles from the famous ancient landmark and lies inside a massive man-made circular dirt wall, or "henge", known as the Durrington Walls.

Remains found at the site included jewellry, stone arrowheads, tools made of deer antlers, wooden spears and huge amounts of animal bones and broken pottery'. "These finds suggest Stone Age people went to the village at special times of the year to feast and party", says Mike Parker-Pearson from Sheffield University in England.

He said many of the pig bones they found had been thrown away half-eaten. He also said the partygoers appeared to have shot some of the farm pigs with arrows,  possibly as a kind of sport before barbecuing them.

An ancient road which led from the village to the River Avon was also found. Here, the experts think, people came 'after their parties to throw dead relatives in the water so the bodies would be washed downstream to Stonehenge.

Parker-Pearson believes Stonehenge was like a cemetery where ancient Britons buried the dead and remembered their ancestors. "The theory is that Stonehenge is a kind of spirit home to the ancestors."

The recent discovery of the village within the Durrington Walls shows that Stonehenge didn't stand alone but was part of a much bigger religious site, according to Parker-Pearson.. That small difference is enough that the fish can live at the freezing temperature of the ice-salt mixture.

The scientists’ next research job was clear: Find out what kind of stuff in the fish’s blood kept it from freezing. Their research led to some really mysterious stuff made up of a protein (蛋白质) never before seen in the blood of a fish. When this stuff was removed, the blood froze at seawater temperature. When it was put back, the blood again had its antifreeze character and a lowered freezing point.

Crashing a state dinner at the White House without any invitation apparently takes a security breakdown as well as some kind of courage.

The Washington Post first reported that a couple, Tareq and Michaele Salahi, not on the official guest list, managed to slip into the state dinner at the White House on Nov. 24, 2009. The dinner was held to honor Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh. According to the Post, the uninvited guests had stayed in the same place with the Obamas and other important figures.

The U. S. Secret Service learned about the security breach (破坏) on Wednesday only after the couple boasted online about having attended the state dinner. One of the many photos from the dinner posted on her blog shows the couple with the smiling Vice President Joe Biden.

The White House has asked the Secret Service for a full review of what happened. “ The Secret Service is looking into its security procedures after determining that. ” Secret Service spokesman Ed Donovan said. “ An initial (初步的) finding has identified that one of our checkpoints did not follow proper procedures to ensure that the two individuals were on the invited guests list,” Donovan said. But he also said President Obama was never in any danger as well as the others at the dinner, because all the party attenders went through the security screening for weapons as there were more than three hundred people invited. “ But we do not rely on just magnetometers (检测仪) or the level of screenings, ” he added. “ That’s why we have the guards with our protectees at all times ”.

The following are more reactions to this incident:

* One senator thought authorities ought to pursue criminal charges against the couple and such behavior should be strongly discouraged.

* “ There is no need of legal help for the couple, as they just went to a party. They didn’t do anything wrong,” a lawyer expressed his opinion on this eye-catching security breach.

* Evan Botny, a current affair commentator, on Sunday said his concern was about the long-term effect on U.S. security, so it should be regarded more than a laughing matter.

* Meanwhile, a TV executive added that the couple’s attempt might be focused on money, as they

were offering interviews to networks on their experience.
