摘要:5.The Word “impoverished in the ninth paragraph means . A.poor and exhausted. B.rich and developed. C.clean and fresh. D.dirty and remote. C Red leaf fans are now praying for cold weather. The falling leaves of autumn are a complete delight to color-pleased tourists. And the Fragrant Hills in northwest Beijing is not the only place to watch this autumn's scenery. But the real change in color happens only when a cold snap occurs, usually a drop of 10 C. Unfortunately for red-leaf watchers, the weather experts are predicting sunny skies and 20 C temperatures for at least another week. But when the cold change eventually comes, a 230-km belt of red leaves will appear around the outskirts of Beijing. The Red Leaves Project was started by the Beijing Forestry Bureau in 2000. At the Fragrant Hills, the 12th Red Leaf Festival runs from this weekend to Dec 8 and tickets cost 10 yuan. The annual event is held every fall, when all the Fragrant Hills are blanketed with fiery red leaves. The abundance of rain this summer has promoted the growth of red-leaf trees, so the viewing time is expected to last until mid November at least. A Fragrant Hills spokesman said the best time to see red leaves in the park was from now to early December.More than 90 percent of the leaves will turn red during the period. The park will hold a series of activities such as photography contest and poetry competition. The park is also cooperating with Fragrant Hills post office to design a series of red-leaf postcards.

Some English words are made up of the same part and have different beginnings or different endings, such as import, export, repot and transport. All these words, you can see, have the same root “port” , which comes from the Latin word, meaning “to carry”  or “to move” from one place to another. And according to the bit at the beginning—which we call the prefix (前缀)—the meaning changes: “im” means “in” , so the word “import”  means “to carry in” , or “to bring into a country” ; “ex” means “out of” ,so the word “export” means “to carry out of a country” ; “re” means “back”, so the word “report” means “to tell somebody, to bring back information to somebody” ; “trans”  means “across” , so “transport”  means “to carry from one place to another” .

Let’s look at the following words: supporter, reporter, importer and exporter. You can see that in this case these words are nouns which are made up of the verbs plus the suffix (后缀 ) “er” , thus meaning a person who completes the “verb” . So supporter means somebody who supports something. A reporter is somebody who reports something. Importer is somebody who imports something and exporter is somebody who exports something, and so on.

Dolan began swimming at the age of 5,because his elder sister Kathleen was a swimmer." Whatever she
did, I wanted to beat her," he says. While he says he was a" pool rat" as a child, he didn't aggressively pursue
swimming until his freshman year in high school. Golf was his favourite sport then-he played for his high
school team until his junior year.
Dolan grew up in Arlington, Virginia, and his early development as a swimmer was under the guidance of
Rick Curl. At the University of Michigan, he trained under head coach Jon Urabancheck, who helped mold
Dolan into an Olympic champion. During breaks from school, Dolan would reunite with Curl, and in the
lead-up to Sydney, he returned home full time. In April 2000, Dolan told the Detroit Free Press," My whole
career I had gone back and forth, but now I'm spending the whole year with Rick. But where I go and swim,
I'll always be linked to Michigan and to Jon, just as I will to Rick."
Dolan was 18 when he entered the 1994 World Championships. He remembers being near all the big stars
and noticing they were staring at him. He won the 400 IM title in world record time. He successfully defended
his world title four years later in Perth, Australia. Dealing with asthma (哮喘) and poor air quality, Tom Dolan
could hardly breathe at the 1996 Atlanta Games. But as the top world champion and world record holder in the
400-metre individual medley(混合泳),he was determined to win Olympic gold." My legs were burning pretty
bad, and I couldn't get any oxygen. I knew it was between me and Eric, and I just gave it everything I had
coming into the wall," says Dolan. He touched first, just ahead of fellow American Eric, who got the silver.
1. Which of the following can best describe Dolan when he was young?
A. His elder sister swam better than him.
B. Golf became his favourite sport only after he entered high school.
C. He began to be very fond of swimming when he became a new student in high school.
D. Competing with his sister in swimming made him known as a " pool rat".
2. The underlined word "mold" in the second paragraph means _____.
A. guide
B. paint
C. learn
D. tell
3. Dolan owes his success to _____.
A. Eric
B. his sister
C. Jon and Rick
D. his high school
4. It was____ that might have made Dolan win a gold medal in Atlanta.
A. being a world-record holder
B. the 400 IM title in 1994
C. help from his fellow teammate
D. his determination

[1] With many job postings(公开招聘)now requiring candidates to apply via e-mail, first impressions are made not with a handshake but with words on a computer screen.

[2] Just like it's usually a good idea to dress best for an interview, e-mails also should be refined(文雅高尚).________ , here are some tips:

Forget what instant messaging has taught you

[3] Recruiters(招聘人员)report that young professionals often send overly casual e-mails, treating an application like an instant message(IM).When using IM with friends and acquaintances, it's acceptable to use shortened forms of words or phrases and incomplete sentences. In business correspondence, however, stick to the rules your Chinese and English teachers taught you.

  Don't be cool

[4] Your lovely e-mail background of pets playing with each other has got to go.

[5] Comic fonts(字体)are unprofessional.HR managers recommend plain fonts such as Times New Roman or Arial, and black text on a white background. They also warn against sending e-mails from strange addresses.Littlebird@ or Chinatiger@ might not get what you hope for.

Don't be too creative in the subject line

[6] Use plain, simple language like “Talented candidate seeking position as [name of position]” or “Enthusiastic candidate seeking position with [name of company]”.Use one word to describe yourself, but do not go to extremes.

[7] The same rules apply to a paper resume and cover letter.Recruiters have only seconds to devote to each cover letter they receive. Many look at just three things: the positions you’ve held, the companies you’ve worked for, and your educational background.Anything else, such as a long story about yourself, can get in the way.

1.What do recruiters pay attention to when they receive an application letter?(no more than 15 words)
