摘要:C It often happens that a number of applicants with almost identical qualifications and experience all apply for the same position. In their educational background, special skills and work experience, there is little, if anything, to choose between half a dozen candidates. How then does the employer make a choice? There are many arguments for and against the interview as a selection procedure. The main argument against it is that it results in a wholly subjective decision. As often as not, employers do not choose best candidates, they choose the candidate who makes a good first impression on them. Some employers, of course, reply to his argument by saying that they have become so experienced in interviewing staff so that they are able to make a sound assessment of each candidate’s likely performance. The main argument in favor of the interview and it is, a good argument--is that an employer is concerned not only with a candidate’s ability, but with the suitability of his or her personality for the particular work situation. Many employers, for example will ignore occasional mistakes from their secretary provided she has a pleasant personality, character and social ability. Unfortunately, both for the employers and applicants for jobs, there are many people of great ability who simply do not interview well. There are also, of course, people who interview extremely well, but are later found to be very unsatisfactory employees. Candidates who interview well tend to be quietly confident, but never boastful; direct and straightforward in their questions and answers; cheerful and friendly, but never over familiar; and sincerely enthusiastic and optimistic. Candidates who interview badly tend to be at either end of the spectrum of human behavior. They are either very shy or overconfident. They show either a lack of enthusiasm or an excess of it. They either talk too little or never stop talking. They are either over-polite or rudely abrupt. 69. We can infer from the passage that an employer might tolerate his secretary’s occasional mistakes, if the latter is . A. direct B. cheerful C. shy D. capable 70. What is the author’s attitude towards the interview as a selection procedure? A. Unclear B. Negative C. Objective D. Indifferent 71. According to the passage, people argue over the interview as a selection procedure mainly because they have . A. different selection procedures B. different purposes in the interview C. different standards for competence D. different experienced interviews 72. The underlined word “subjective in the second paragraph means . A. based on personal taste B. existing outside the mind C. reasonable D. unreliable

第三部分:阅读(共两节,满分35分)

第一节:阅读理解(共15小题;每小题2分,满分30分)

    阅读下列短文,从每题所给的A、B、C和D项中,选出最佳选项,并在答题卡上将该项涂黑。

There was a tradition in Europe that if a dove flew around a house where someone was dying then his soul would be at peace. And there are legends(传说) which say that Satan (撒旦) can turn himself into any bird except for a dove. But it was Pablo Picasso who made the dove a modern symbol of peace when he used it on a poster for the World Peace Congress in 1949.

The rainbow is another ancient and universal symbol, often representing the connection between human beings and their gods. In Greek mythology(神话) it was associated with Iris, the goddess who brought messages from the gods on Mount Olympus. In Scandinavian mythology the rainbow was a bridge between the gods and the earth. In the Bible a rainbow showed Noah that the Biblical flood was finally over, and that God had forgiven his people. In the Chinese tradition, the rainbow is often taken as a common symbol for marriage.

Nowadays the rainbow is used by many popular movements for peace and the environment, representing the possibility of a better world in the future and promising sunshine after the rain.

The olive tree has always been a valuable source of food and oil. In Greek mythology, the goddess Athens gave the olive tree to the people of Athens who showed their thanks by naming the city after her. But no one knows for sure when or why it began to symbolize peace. There is probably a connection with ancient Greece. The winners of the Olympic Games were given crowns (冠) of olive branches. The symbolism may come from the fact that the olive tree takes a long time to produce fruit, so olives could only be grown successfully in long periods of peace. Whatever the history, the olive branch is a part of many modern flags symbolizing peace and unity. One well-know example is the United Nations symbol.

67. How many examples does the writer give to show the rainbow as a universal symbol of peace?

   A. Six       B. Three        C. Four       D. Five

68. Which of the following is TRUE according to the passage?

   A. The olive branch was regarded as a symbol of peace because it was given as gift by the goddess Athene.

   B. The name of the capital of Greece comes from the name of the goddess Athene.

   C. Olive trees do not produce fruits when there are wars in the world.

   D. The winners in the Olympic Games were given crowns of olive branches because they symbolized peace.

69. The United Nations takes the olive branch as its symbol because________.

   A. it represents hope in the future

   B. it has economic value for the world

   C. it often gives prizes to countries

   D. its duty is to keep peace and union

70. From the passage we can conclude that ______.

   A. all the symbols mentioned above are based on traditional beliefs

   B. all modern ideas come from Greek mythology

   C. all the symbols mentioned above are used on flags

   D. the UN has officially accepted the three symbols as symbols of peace

Carbon monoxide poisoning (一氧化碳中毒) causes death and injuries around the world. This gas is a
problem in all parts of the world that experience cold weather. A few years ago, America's Centers for Disease
Control (C. D. C. ) studied deaths linked to carbon monoxide poisoning. It found that the average number of
carbon monoxide deaths in the United States was greatest in January. The C. D. C. also found that carbon
monoxide kills more than four hundred Americans each year. And, it said more than twenty thousand people
are taken to hospital emergency rooms for treatment of health problems linked to the gas.
Carbon monoxide is called the silent killer because people do not know it is in the air. The gas has no color,
no taste and no smell. It does not cause burning eyes. And it does not cause people to cough. Yet, carbon
monoxide gas is very deadly. It steals the body's ability to use oxygen.
Carbon monoxide decreases the ability of the blood to carry oxygen to body tissues. It does this by linking
with the blood. When the gas links with the blood, the blood is no longer 1able to carry oxygen to the tissues
that need it. Damage to the body can begin very quickly from large amounts of carbon monoxide.
How quickly this can happen depends on the length of time a person is breathing the gas and the amount of
the gas he or she breathes in.
Carbon monoxide poisoning has warning signs. But people have to be awake to recognize them. Small
amounts of the gas will cause a person's head to hurt. He or she may begin to feel tired. The victim's stomach
may feel sick. The room may appear to be turning around. The person may have trouble thinking clearly.
People develop severe head pain as the amount of the gas continues to enter their blood. They will begin to
feel very tired and sleepy. They may have terrible stomach pains.
Medical experts say carbon monoxide affects people differently. For example a small child will experience
health problems or die much sooner than an adult. The general health of the person or his or her age can also
be important.
1. What can we learn from the last paragraph?
A. A small child will experience health problems or die much slower than an adult.
B. An unhealthy adult may suffer more from the effects of CO than normal people.
C. People with heart disease do not suffer chest pains.
D. Carbon monoxide affects people all the same.
2. What is the most deadly damage to one's life when CO is breathed in?
A. It stops the blood from carrying oxygen to where the body needs.
B. It may cause him/her to feel tired and sleepy.
C. It often causes him/her to suffer terrible stomachache.
D. It slows down people's thinking.
3. The damage of CO to the body has something to do with _____.
A. people's gas intake
B. people's length
C. people's reaction
D. whether people are sleeping or not

Sitting in a dark movie theater with your friends. and a tub of popcorn (H^) sounds like a perfect way to spend a Saturday night, and it could be, if you are willing to share your popcorn with the entire row of moviegoers around you.

A review of movie-theater popcorn reveals an alarming amount of fat, salt and calories in even the smallest sizes. A large tub of popcorn at Regal Cinemas, for example, holds 20 cups of popcorn and has 1,200 calories, 980 milligrams of sodium (钠) and 60 grams of saturated (饱和的) fat. Adding just a tablespoon of butter adds 130 calories. And do not forget that it comes with free refills.

Not so hungry? The medium size popcorn, even the small, at 11 cups, delivers 670 calories, 550 milligrams of sodium .and 24 grams of saturated fat. The findings may surprise those who believe it is a relatively healthy snack. In fact, plain air-popped popcorn is low in calories and free of saturated fat. Movie theater popcorn, however, is popped in oil, often coconut oil, which is 90 percent saturated fat. Add salt to it, and your once-healthy snack turns into a health offender.

One way to make your popcorn healthier? Ask the theater to pop the corn without salt. The best way to make your movie snack healthier, however, would be to skip the popcorn.

"You could share a tub of popcorn with 10 friends," Dr. Nestle, a professor of nutrition at New York University, said. "Or, what a concept, watch the movie without eating anything."

64. The review finds that movie theatre popcorn may contain all the following EXCEPT ______.

A. butter          B. sodium                 C. saturated fat         D. pepper

65. What does the author think of popcorn prepared in coconut oil?

A. It is a healthy snack.                        B. It does harm to our health.

C. It looks like a perfect choice.                       D. It is very nutritious.

66. Which kind of popcorn causes the least health concern?

A. Movie theatre popcorn.                                 B. Popcorn sold at Regal Cinemas.

C. Large size popcorn.                                      D. Plain air-popped popcorn.

67. What is Dr. Nestle's suggestion to moviegoers?

A. Avoid eating popcorn.                                  B. Share popcorn with friends.

C. Not eating anything in the movie theatre.        D. Try eating other kind of food.
