Richard Rice, a fast-talking man paced up and down in front of freshmen debate class,  1  us about his high expectations．We were special, he declared on our first day at Oak Park High School．But there would be no  2   to success．Only those who worked hard would shine．

It was the first mow of winter -- an exciting day for every, child but not for most tether. Up until now, l had been able to dress myself for recess（课间休息）, but today I would need some help. Miss Finlayson, my kindergarten teacher at Princess Elizabeth School near Hamilton, Ontario, had been through first snow days ,tony times in her long career, but I think struggled still remember this one.

I managed to get into my wool snow pants. But I straggled with my jacket because it didn’t fit well. It was a hand-me-down from my brother, and it made me wonder why I had to wear his ugly clothes. At least my hat and matching scarf were mine, and they were quite pretty. Finally it was time to have Miss Finlayson help me with my boots. In her calm, motherly voice she said, "By the end of winter, you will be able to put on own boots. “ I didn’t realize at the time that this was more a statement of hope than of confidence.

I handed her my boots and stuck out my foot. Like most children, I expected the adult to do an the work. After mush wiggling and pushing, she managed to get first one into place and then, with a sigh, worked the second one on too.

I announced，“They’re on the wrong feet．”With the grace that only experience can bring，she struggled to get the boots off and went through the joyless task of putting them on again．Then I said，“These aren’t my boots．you know．”As she pulled the offending boots from my feet，she still managed to look both helpful and interested．Once they were off．I said，“They are my brother’s boots．My mother makes me wear them，and I hate them!” Somehow，from long years of practice，she managed to act as though I wasn’t an annoying little girl．She pushed and shoved．less gently this time，and the boots were returned to their proper place on my feet．With a great sigh of relief，seeing the end of her struggle with me，she asked，“Now，where are your gloves?’’

I looked into her eyes and said．“I didn’t want to lose them．so I put them into the toes of my boots．”

Let’s say you have a piece of wood, a nail, and a hammer. Pretend the wood is a person, and the nail is a mean rumor(谣言) about that person. If you hammer in the nail, you’re obviously hurting him or her. If you then pull out the nail, there’s still a hole in the wood, and the damage has been done.

There are many reasons why that nail of a rumor can be so harmful. Rumors are, quite simply, a form of bullying(欺侮). When a person or a group makes up a rumor about someone or decides to spread gossip, it’s usually to hurt someone, break up a friendship, or make someone less popular. It’s the same thing as teasing, only it’s done behind someone’s back instead of to his or her face.

When you spread a rumor about someone, you’re sending a signal that the person is outside of the group, and somehow less worthy of friendship than others. You’re making fun of that person or pointing out negative things about him or her. This can let others think that it’s okay to make the person feel bad, and make him or her an outsider.

We need to be able to trust our friends, and gossip and rumors can break this trust. If you tell a personal secret to a friend, and he turns around and tells it to someone else, you might feel like you will get burned if you ever get close to him again.

Letting a rumor influence your behavior is like letting someone else make a big decision for you. Let’s say you hear that the teacher plans to call a Snow Day tomorrow because a blizzard (暴风雪) is coming. Expecting a day off, you don’t do your homework. The next morning, the blizzard turns out to be nothing more than a drizzle(毛毛雨), and school isn’t off after all. You get zeroes on your work.

It wasn’t too long ago that I was in high school trying to balance hours of homework, dance team practice three days a week, taking voice lessons an hour a week, rehearsals for the drama show, holding down a weekend job and at the same time trying to have a social life. Colleges and employers have put an emphasis on the importance of being involved in school activities, most kids these days are trying to do more than they can. If it doesn’t seem possible, trust me, even though I learned the hard way, I somehow managed to make it due to serious Time Management.

When I was a freshman in high school I tried to do it all without making sure that I had time for myself. Well, I learned quickly that it was impossible to do everything and remain the same. I was rushing everywhere; I was skipping lunches to have meetings and do homework; I barely saw my family, much less to talk to them; I accidentally made dates to hang out with separate groups of friends on the same night; and, as if it couldn’t be any worse, I was barely sleeping. Getting sick was out of the question for me because it would mess up my schedule. This seemed to work until I noticed that I was falling asleep in class, arriving late to school, and calling in sick to work more often than not. I realized that I needed to brush up on my Time Management skills and work fast.

So I sat down with my mom and organized all the activities that I wanted to be involved in, next I prioritized; I decided what activities were most important to me. Schoolwork came first, second time with friends, and then my after – school activities. By doing this I even realized that I wasn’t enjoying playing a sport; I much preferred to spend that time hanging out with my friends. All of a sudden I saw what was important to me and time went to doing that rather than wasting it on activities that just sounded good to me.
