30th June

Dear Aihua,

How are you? Sorry I haven’t written for so long. I’ve been quite busy planning my holiday with may older brother, Coin. Do you still remember the trip I told you about? I told you Colin and I would spend a few weeks traveling before he goes to university. Well, now we’re ready to go! We’re going to visit so many exciting places and do lots of astonishing things. We will go to Africa first. I can’t wait! Have you been there?

We leave London on 15th July, and we’ll be flying to Morocco, in Northern Africa. We’re going to travel on camels through the Sahara Desert. It’s the biggest desert in the world-about the size of The US! I expect it will be very hot, dry and dusty there. We’ll be traveling by camel, with local guides, camping in tents and sleeping on the ground in our big, thick sleeping bags. I’ve heard that we can se beautiful stars on clear nights. I’ll bring a torch with me so that I’ll be able to see in the dark. The whole trip will take six days. That means I’ll have to sit on a came for almost a week-how uncomfortable! I hope my camel likes me!

After the trip by camel, we’ve going to travel down the River Nile. We’ll start at Lake Victoria. A little way down the river from Victoria, the water actually gets quite rough. So, we’ll go white-water rafting. It’s quite dangerous, but very exciting! We have to wear special clothing, a helmet and a life jacket, just in case the raft gets turned upside down or sinks after white-water rafting, we’re going on a trip to see wild animals in Kenya. We’ll live with the local people in their villages, and eat and drink like they do, including cow’s blood! Do you think I should drink it?

Since we’ll be walking every day for almost two weeks, I’ll need to buy a large, strong, light backpack to carry my supplies of food and water. During the day, we’ll walk across the land, following the footprints of big animals such as elephants, lions and giraffes. We’ll try to get as close as possible to the animals, even though they’re dangerous, so that I can take some really good photos. But don’t worry about me―our Guides will have guns with them to scare the animals away if they come too close. I really want to see an elephant up close. Colin wants to see a giraffe.

After that, we’ll be moving on to Tanzania, where we’re going to climb Mount Kilimanjaro. Mountain climbing can be very tiring, and many people feel sick as the air gets thinner, so Colin and I will make sure that we will get enough rest after sunset. The African part of our trip will take about four weeks. Then we’re going to the Himalayas. I’ll send you postcards from all the different places we visit!

“Do you know how happy you are?” a woman behind us asked.“I would love to go home and find my house a mess.I wouldn’t mind my floor being dirty.Nor would I mind the dirty clothes being piled high.I wouldn’t even mind anyone talking about my dirty home.I would love it.I would love to kick my way through the house just to get to my kids and be able to hug them, kiss them and tell them how much I love them. You see, my two children were killed in an accident. My house stays clean; my clothes stay put up; the dishes are done.”

“There are no fingerprints on my walls. There are no sounds of arguing, either. So you see, you are very lucky.I would give anything to be going through what you are now! (1) The word addiction usually makes you think of alcohol or drugs, but in modern-day society we are seeing some new kinds of addictions. Some people are compulsive (难以自制的) shoppers. Others find it impossible to pull themselves away from their work. Still others spend countless hours watching TV or playing computer games.

(2) Over the years, shopping has become a very common activity. Many people enjoy going to stores more and more every day, but it’s more than a common hobby for some of them. They have turned into shopaholics. They are people who simply enjoy shopping and walking around spending money without being able to stop doing. They are booked on shopping and usually buy things that they don’t need. Even though they don’t have enough money, they buy everything they want.

(3) The question is, why do they have this addiction? There isn’t a specific answer. Some people go shopping when they are sad, worried, upset or lonely and they want to feel better. They use this activity as a way to forget their problems. Shopaholics say they feel more important and better after they buy something. They also tend to have this addition when they feel guilty.

(4) Shopaholism seems to be harmless addiction, but it can _____. Some of them can be psychological. If this is the case, people addicted to shopping should go to a support group to help them break this habit. However, the process, like for most addictions, is long, and they suffer a lot. It can also cause financial problems. They just think about satisfying their feelings, so they spend money they don’t have. They get deep in debt, and they can even go bankrupt and get sent to prison.

阅读下面的短文,并根据短文后的要求答题(请注意问题后的字数要求)。

Safety in the highway is not totally out of hands. Here are four ways we can protect ourselves when we travel.

You are safer in a large car. People in small cars are injured more often and more severely than people traveling in large cars. Factories of small cars are strengthening their products’ safety, which helps. But the mix of large cars and small cars on the road is the main reason of the problem.

Being thrown into glass and metal car parts, or being thrown from the car, can really damage to you. That’s why safety belts should be worn. The safety belt’s main purpose is ___________if your car has a sudden crash with another vehicle or object, or if it rolls over. A belt can reduce the chance of fatal injury by 45% and the chance of serious injury by 50%.

Air bags are important. More than half of all new cars sold have air bags. Air bags provide protection in frontal(正面的)crashes—the type of crash that kills the most drivers—when they are also wearing safety belts. Most people are demanding air bags in the cars they buy. But the protection provided by air bags is limited in side or rear crashes; effective as they are, they can’t take the place of safety belts.

Drunk driving crashes are less likely to happen if you don’t drink. Drunk driving is the most serious problem. Many people have realized that drunk driving can lead to death and injury, prison time and other results. There are movements to strengthen penalties(处罚) for drinking and driving.

1. What is the main idea of the passage? (Please answer within 10 words.)

2. Which of the sentences in the passage can be replaced by the following one?

Although they are effective, you should still wear your safety belts while driving.

3. Please fill in the blank with proper words to make the sentence completed.(Please answer within 6 words.)

4. Please translate the underlined sentence into Chinese.

6. What other suggestions can you offer? Why?(Please answer within 30 words.)
