Student's self-assessment: My exam results are good in all subjects and I am very pleased about this because I did a lot of revision. My best results were in my favorite subjects, physics and chemistry.I know I am good at them and I enjoy doing scientific experiments, for example, learning about how metals react to different substances.

“Keep an eye on this,”said my older brother, Paul, handing me his watch.

  “What for?”I asked.

“I'm going to practice my diving.”

  “Off the high dive?”I asked.

  “Sure,”said Paul.“Want to join me?”

I didn't answer.Paul knew I was terrified of heights.I could manage the low board, but the high board?Never.

I watched enviously as Paul walked to the end of the board, paused briefly, and did a perfect jackknife. It looked so easy.

  “Hey, why not?”teased a reckless(鲁莽的)voice in my head.“You're a good simmer.”

So when Paul came back, I said casually,“I'll take a turn, too.”And before Paul could make some remarks, I got to my feet.

As I walked to the tower, my legs didn't seem to belong to me.Standing on the end of the board, I looked down.

I couldn't believe how far away the water was.I felt as if I were on the edge of a cliff with a mile of air between me and a bottomless sea.I couldn't; I just couldn't.I had to get back down. But there were impatient kids on the steps behind me.Would they let me by, or would they tease me?And Paul-even in my terror I guessed what he would say.

Suddenly I heard Paul shouting far below.“Come down right now!My watch, you're wearing my watch.”

An unbelievably sweet relief flooded into me.I quickly turned and threaded my way through the waiting divers, murmuring,“Excuse me, sorry, I just forget about the watch…”

I didn't even bother to pretend with Paul.He said,“I could see that you were in trouble. You were scared to death, weren't you?I nodded.

“It happens,”said Paul.“I was scared, too, the first few times off the high board.I got over it, and so will you.But for now you're saved.”

I said,“Me?I thought you were worried-I mean, you said you were worried-about your watch.”

  “This watch,”he said,“is waterproof.”

Alex felt restless.Along with his sister Rosita and his friend Hugo, Alex had been waiting in the cave for nearly three hours expecting either an attack from the returning robbers or the arrival of a rescue party, but nothing had happened. He and Rosita had some food and a sleep, and now it was Hugo’s turn to sleep after his meal.Rosita was lying in the entrance to the cave keeping watch on the valley below.Alex threw himself down beside her.

“I do hope Ruark is all right,” she said, her eyes on the view outside.“I keep hoping I will see him somewhere.”

“I’m sure he is okay,” answered Alex.“I’m pretty certain the enemy thought it was a ground attack.Anyway, they were too busy rushing to get away in their land rover to waste time firing at the condor(神鹰).I’m not worried about him. What I’m worried, though, are the words on that tape that was attached to Ruark’s leg.I keep saying the words to myself:

What about the cave? There’s a two-meter hole at the back of it.No one will find it.There are so many caves….

The money they stole is hidden somewhere out there and I should hate them to come back and take it from under our noses.”

“Well,” replied his sister, “you heard what the man said. There are so many caves. At a guess, I can see about two hundred of them dotted about. It could take a week to look in them all.

“Yes.It’s a clever hiding place, but I think we have one clue that might help us.Ruark settled somewhere near enough from the tape to pick up their voices. He was probably situated just above the entrance.Condors are not exactly tiny birds so he may have been on a shelf or a overhanging rock large enough to take his big feet and body,” He half closed his eyes against the strong light outside and tried to examine the opposite side of the valley.
