I used to be a mortgage broker(贷款中间人) in the Phoenix area. In April 2007, the company that I had been with for a year went out of business. That was the latest of the four companies that I had worked for since 2000 .They all either went under or let most of the employees go, including me.

In December 2007, the bank took back my house, and I had no choice but to move in with my parents, five miles away. My sister has three children, and she had no room. My fiancée(未婚妻), Brandi Wetch, and I have been living in my parents’ house for about a year and a half now.

My mother, Sue, works part-time at a high school library. My father left for a job in the Marshall Islands a few months ago and will be gone for two years.

I’m trying to be patient with finding a new job, but it’s been hard. I check the Internet for jobs every morning. I have sent countless letters but have never got a job. I have no idea how many other people are applying for the same job.

I do the housework and washing, and I take care of the garden. Sometimes, I feel like the best part of my life is over. The worst part of the day is when I chat with my friends on the Internet. I’ve talked to about 10 old friends online. The first thing they usually ask is what I’m doing now.

My mother, who is in her 60s, has been so patient and supportive. She acts like she’s happy to have us, not like we’re crowding her. We have learned what’s important since I lived here.

Ever since Jerusha started her college, she began to write letters. Through a series of letters, from freshman to senior in college, she shared her life and study with an unknown gentleman, who never wrote back. Here is the very first letter.

Dear Mr. Kind,

Here I am! I traveled yesterday for four hours in a train. It's a funny experience. I never rode in one before.

College is the biggest, most confusing place — I get lost whenever I leave my room. I will tell you more later when I'm feeling less puzzled. Now I want to write a letter first just to get me familiar to you.

It seems strange to be writing letters to somebody you don't know. It seems strange for me to be writing letters at all — I've never written more than three or four in my life, so please overlook it if they are not a model kind.

Before leaving yesterday morning, Mrs. Lippett and I had a very serious talk. She told me how to behave, especially towards the kind gentleman who is doing so much for me. I must take care to be very respectful.

I have been thinking of you a great deal this summer; having somebody take an interest in me after all these years makes me feel as though I had found a sort of family. It seems as though I belonged to somebody now, and it's a very comfortable feeling. I must say, however, that when I think about you, my imaqination has very little to work upon.

There are just three things that I know:

    I .You are tall.

    II .You are rich.

    III. You hate girl.

I suppose I might call you Dear Mr. Girl-Hater. Only that's rather unpleasant to me. Or Dear Mr. Rich-Man, but that's unpleasant to you, as though money were the only important thing about you. Maybe you won't stay rich all your life; But at least you will stay tall all your life! So I decide to call you Dear Daddy-long-legs. I hope you won't mind. It's just a private pet name — we won't tell Mrs. Lippett.

The ten o'clock bell is going to ring in two minutes. Our day is divided by bells. We eat and sleep and study by bells. There it goes! Lights out. Good night.

You can see how strictly I obey rules due to my training in the John Grier Home.

Yours most respectfully,

Jerusha Abbott

1.Which of the following is NOT the reason for Jerusha to write the letter to Mr.Kind?

   A. To get her familiar to him.                                 B. To present her thankfulness to him.

   C. To share her brand-new college life with him.

   D. To apologize to him for not writing letters too often.

2.If Mrs. Lippett learned that the writer calls the man she writes to Daddy-long-legs, she would probably         .

A. burst into laughter    B. think it acceptable

C. criticize the writer  D. inform the man

3.By "when I think about you, my imagination has very little to work upon.", the writer intends to tell us that        .

    A. the man she writes to is dull and boring

    B. she is not familiar with the one she writes to

    C. it is not interesting at all to write to a stranger

    D. she lacks imagination when it comes to writing a letter

4.Jerusha was probably          while she worked on the letter.

   A. curious             B. light-hearted       C. serious            D. skeptical

My father woke me up early one summer morning when I was fourteen and announced:“Get up.You’re going with me to cut grass.”

The idea that my father actually thought I was big enough to help him in his business made me feel proud and excited. From sunup to sundown my father, my younger brother and I worked in the large yards in a rich part of Atlanta, Georgia.By the end of the day I was tired out, but I felt good.I had put in a hard day’s labor and had earned $6.

One day my father found some leaves I’d missed and pulled me aside.“Clear away these leaves, ” he said firmly, “and don’t make me have to do it again, ” The message was clear.Today I value the importance of doing a job right the first time.It will never fail to impress the person you are working for.

After two years my father told me and my brother that he felt we were old enough to do lawns(草坪)on our own.Every Saturday during our last two years of high school, we set out early in the morning with the same desire and drive we had gained while working under our father.

Taking care of lawns was not exciting or high-paying, but that didn’t matter. It taught me that any job is a good job and that whatever I was paid was more than I had before.

A newspaper reporter once asked me how someone could possibly live on a forty-hour-a-week minimum(最低的)pay.“My father never worked just forty hours a week and neither have I, ”I replied.“If you’re only working forty hours, you probably don’t want to do any better than you’re doing.”

In every job I’ve held from doing lawns to washing dishes, I have learned something that helped me in my next job.If you look hard enough, you can learn from any job you do.

     Dear Daddy,
You've been gone for six years and I've had time to think. Now I'm ready to write this letter
to you.
For a long time after Mom died,I thought I liked her more because I didn't like your tough
guy attitude and I thought that her softer side was more desirable. In my 15yearold's mind,I

realized since you died is that you were always there for me.You fought to ensure that I got my
place on the Quebec badminton team that I had earned. When I got divorced, you came up to see
if I had what I needed to take care of the boys and you paid off my car.
You taught me not to spend money I don't have.I've always kept to that rule.It has served me
well.We always had a good home to live in,nice vacations, and everything we needed and most of
what we wanted.
You were not a perfect parent and neither am I.My children are much more thankful than I
ever was.I am thankful that I had you as my dad.I am still Daddy's girl and I am proud of it.

A psychologist once said,“If you’ve conquered every one of your fears, congratulations — you’re dead.”This humorous quote points to a simple truth — no one can escape fear completely.

However, fear can be a good thing. It is a natural, healthy reaction to danger. In fact, sometimes we are afraid of things that aren’t dangerous, such as public speaking, failing a test, or being rejected. These unhealthy fears can keep us from fulfilling our dreams. So how can we successfully face our fears?

First, admit what you fear and then share it with someone you trust. Perhaps you worry that others would look down on you if they know what you fear, but you might be surprised at how many other people share the same fears. Learning you are not the only one who fears something will give you self-esteem(自尊心) a push. Second, ask yourself,“What is the worst-case scenario(最坏的情况)?”This question can help you gain perspective(洞察力).If you think about it, the worst might not be that bad, after all. Compared with the fear of losing a contest or being turned down, the regret of having missed opportunities can be even harder to bear. Even worse, you will never know what you might have accomplished. Finally, take small steps toward conquering your fears. If you fear public speaking, start by giving a small talk to a few people. If your talk doesn’t go well, try again. Each small success will increase your confidence and persistence is one of the keys to success.

You might never completely conquer your fear of certain things, but what is important is that you can bring yourself to do what you fear. True bravery is feeling afraid but doing what you have to do anyway. It’s also true that you struggle with fear and don’t let your fears stop you from getting the most out of life.

1.This passage mainly discusses      .

A. the harm of fear to success             B. varieties of fear

C. ways to handle fear                   D. necessity of fear

2.In the writer’s opinion, what might be even worse than losing a contest?

A. Being turned down by others.

B. Forgetting what to say in public speaking.

C. Sharing ideas with others.

D. Missing an opportunity.

3.According to the passage, which of the following is NOT true?

A. Not everything we are afraid of is dangerous.

B. It’s encouraged to share your fear with others.

C. It’s difficult to overcome some fears.

D. What you fear should be worse than what you think.

4.It can be learned from the passage that a really courageous person      .

A. does what is necessary to do

B. always achieves what he or she wants

C. has no fear in his or her life

D. never loses a contest
