“Scotty!” Mr. Brown, my Year 11 English teacher, called me by my nickname (绰号) across the classroom. His eyes were bright and a secret   36   was half hidden behind the beard.

Once he finished joking over my unbearable   37  , I realized he was going to read my story aloud to the class. I turned red, feeling at once both embarrassed and   38  . I had my very   39   reading audience! Though my classmates were a ‘passive audience’, it didn’t weaken my feeling of being   40  .

After that, I came to   41   those Year 11 English classes. Throughout school I had always studied hard and achieved well in my school subjects. But creative   42   was a passion, and it was not an assignment, but a way of understanding the world and of   43   my thoughts and feelings about events and attitudes.

Mr. Brown was the first to   44   me for my writing so openly. My scores were always 19/20 or 20/20. My stories were often read out to the class. He even   45   one with the respected Head of English teachers, which was the most   46   part that is impressed on my memory. But   47   that, he offered a belief in me that no other teacher had.

My school   48   often stated, ‘Candice is a quiet achiever.’ I thought it was meant as a(n)   49   for being hard-working. I was someone that no one really   50   before, but Mr. Brown managed to   51   all that by bringing me to the attention of the world. Though it was the relatively   52   world of school, it put the seed of belief in myself that some day I could be an   53   person rather than the person who faded into the background.

I   54   touch with my teacher long ago, as we do when we move away from the school system and enter life. I wish I could tell him now how much he   55   me.

Air pollution is one of the hottest topics at present because poor air quality is an important factor in both the incidence and cause of respiratory(呼吸道) diseases.

Zhong Nanshan, a deputy to the NPC and a member of the CAE, said recently when the concentration of PM2.5 rises by 10 micrograms per cubic meter, hospitalization may rise by as much as 3.1 percent. Meanwhile, when the concentration of PM2.5 rises from 25 mgs per cubic meter to 200, the average daily death rate may rise to 11 percent.

Zhi Xiuyi, a leading expert in lung cancer treatment and also vice-president of the CATS, said medical authorities used to focus on tobacco control as a primary means of preventing lung cancer. "But in fact, air pollution is no less harmful than smoking and our research team released a report earlier this year showing that the cancer rate in Beijing is closely related to industrialization," he said.

The report, conducted by the Beijing Institute of Cancer Research, shows that the number of cancer patients in China has increased markedly during the past ten years. Chaoyang District, the city's main area of industrialization, has the highest incidence of cancer, almost double that of Yanqing, an area on the outskirts of the city. About four out of 1000 Chaoyang residents have some form of the disease, with lung cancer at the top of the list.

"The risk of having cancer largely depends on the length of exposure and the concentration of noxious gases(有毒气体的浓度)," said Zhi. In response to the doubt whether seven years' exposure to poor air quality will almost result in cancer, Zhi said the time scale was taken from research overseas that suggested the rate of incidence generally peaked in the seventh year of exposure to a heavily polluted environment.

3.If there were 3,000,000 people in Chaoyang District, how many would have respiratory diseases?

A. 16000?????? B. 12000?????? C. 8000??????? D. 7500

4.What can you infer from the passage?

A. Industrialization has its weakness as well as strengths.

B. The average death rate rises with different ages and places.

C. The air in Beijing is much more polluted than that in the other cities.

D. The more heavily-polluted air you breathe in, the sooner youll have cancer.

The Focal Point of the “ Chinese Liquor Golden Triangle”
In China, there is a saying: a good spirit(wine) is in Sichuan, but the great one is in Yibin.
Yibin, the birthplace of Wuliangye, has a centuries-old tradition of producing great spirits. At the confluence of Jinsha and Min rivers, Yibin is praised as the first city on the source of the Yangtze River. Here, the water is clean, the soil is rich, and the climate is very favorable for brewing good liquor. The blessings of nature and centuries-old liquor brewing traditions gave rise to “ The Ten-Mile Liquor City ”, the main production facility of domestic liquor giant Wuliangye Group Co. Ltd.
Extending across 10 kilometers and dotted with gardens and sculptures, the city attracts domestic and foreign visitors with its famed liquor brewing and related culture. Another attraction is its legendary Ming Dynasty (1368-1644AD) liquor cellars (酒窖,地下储藏室).
The city has 30,000 large modern brewing tanks that provide an enormous capacity to store liquor.
The high quality of Wuliangye also owes much to its unique brewing techniques and materials. These traditional techniques are included on the list of national intangible(非物质的) cultural heritage.
Wuliangye’s sales revenues(销售额)and pre-tax profits accounted for nearly half of the respective (分别的) 59 billion yuan and 12.5 billion yuan generated by Sichuan’s provincial liquor industry in 2008. Liquor production by large enterprises in the province was about 1.1 million kiloliters, accounting for 19.6% of the production in the country.
Wuliangye is now investing 300 million yuan in a state-of-the-art quality assurance center (质保中心)that has higher standards than national requirements, which will boost the existing quality-control system when it is put into service next year.
With a goal of production value of 100 billion yuan for the year of 2020, Wuliangye is playing a leading role in the development of the liquor industry in the region. A lot of related industries are now building up in the region to create a Chinese Liquor Golden Triangle —the Chinese equivalent (相当于)of the French Bordeaux region---that continues to appear on the upper reaches of the Yangtze River.
