With the advent(出现) of fast food chains from the West such as McDonald's, Kentucky Fried Chicken and Pizza Hut, the Chinese are being introduced to a diet that markedly(明显地) increases the death rate from certain diseases in any population.
The main killers in North America, the degenerative diseases(变性疾病)such as heart attack and stroke as well as colon(结肠) cancer, will become a way of death in this country if the Chinese do not act quickly and compete with these health destroying food chains.
Scientific studies from all over the world show that a diet high in animal foods such as pork, beef, including sugar, white flour, white noodles and even white rice, undermines(破坏) one's health. Deposits of animal fat cling to the walls of arteries(动脉), blocking the blood supply to various organs.
This causes diseases in almost every organ, but in particular it damages two of the most vital ones, the heart and the brain.
Compare these problems with the excellent health one may enjoy if one consumes good Chinese food. The cook goes out every day, procures great-tasting, fresh vegetables, then cooks them for just a few minutes so that their nutritional value is preserved and afterwards serves them in a most artistic and elegant fashion. Please cling to your traditional ways of eating. They are far superior to those of the West.
One reason Western fast food restaurants make money is that the food they serve, which comes from assembly lines(装配线), will not attract bugs(病菌)or spoil easily.
Western restaurants are clean and tastefully decorated. Moreover, these restaurants also do indeed have "good service and an inviting dining atmosphere". However, Chinese food chains could do likewise(同样地)if they would organize themselves as the Western chains do.
These lessons in management and decoration are the only ones worth learning from the Western fast food chains. In other words only imitate the style of the restau-
rants, not the content of the food or the menus in any way, shape or form.
Do not let the desire for money destroy the wonderful tradition that China has established in producing absolutely fantastically tasty as well as healthful food.

查看习题详情和答案>>On September 4th of 2004 my American friend Jon Hageseth took me to the airport in La Crosse, Wisconsin to fetch a new suitcase. To show my thanks, I treated him and his wife with a Mexican lunch on the way back. After we enjoyed the delicious food, I paid the bill and went towards the car, but just when everyone was seated, Jon's wife Cathy returned to the restaurant. I felt puzzled. Upon her return, she said,“You were clever not paying the tip, so I had to go back to pay it.”I felt so embarrassed that I lost no time to apologize, explaining that there is no such a practice in China. In fact, I don't take the tipping issue seriously although I am aware of such a practice in the US.
Another day in September, I dined with one of my American colleagues at a Buffet Restau rant. On finishing the meal I began searching my wallet for small notes.“What are you doing, Zhao Qi?”my colleague asked.“To pay the tip of course.”My colleague burst into laughter,“You don't have to.” “Why?”I asked and recalled my previous embarrassing experience in the Mexican restaurant. And then she told me that it's unnecessary to pay tips at any kind of self-service restaurants, but we have to pay tips only in restaurants where services are provided. I still did not get a clear picture of this issue. Seeing my puzzlement, she offered me some good advice on the situation I should give the tip.
In her opinion, tipping plays an important role in US economy and acts as an unavoidable part of American's daily life. The following are a few facts about tipping taken from various university and market-research studies.

查看习题详情和答案>>A recent trend (趋势) in Californian restaurants shows new eating habits among those out to have an interesting dining experience. Appetizers (开胃品) seem to be the name of the games as diners turn away from the more traditional three-course meal in favor of smaller snacks sampled in various types of restaurants, bars and cafes. In this way, in the course of an evening out, you might go to a restaurant for a tasty dish to eat at one end of town, to a bar with some live music at the other end, then for a coffee, and finally back to the restaurant for a further appetizer.
Reasons for this trend are the fact that so many different types of restaurants have been set up recently, each with their own particular type of food and special atmosphere, combined with the increased sophistication in the type of snacks being offered. Gone are the cheese sticks of the old days, when appetizers were not really taken seriously. Some favorite snacks of the moment are slices of hot pizza, creamy fish-based dishes and crispy cakes and so on.
Prices for appetizers are not equal to a full meal; however, their new popularity has meant that they are by no means as cheap as they used to be. Certainly, for that special occasion, a meal in a nice restaurant, complete with the piano performance, is hard to beat However, if we see that this trend for “butterfly eating”-moving around several different places in one eveningcontinues, then all the traditional style restau-rants may well have to provide their own appetizer bars as well!
(1) How are Californian people's eating habits changing?
[ ]
A.People are dining out less.
B.Californian restaurants are becoming less popular.
C.Most people eat less than they used to.
D.A full restaurant meal is losing popularity.
(2) All the places which serve appetizers________.
[ ]
A.have much the same menu
B.have their own particular characteristics

[ ]
A.need a car or a bus or other transport
B.be bored with some kinds of snacks
C.spend more time for a full meal than you would
D.eat too much meat
(4) Appetizers used to be seen as________.
