Four Steps to Better LearningSheela and Nisha had almost the same level of intelligence and came from similar family backgrounds.Sheela found it hard to memorise a poem for an oral test while Nisha did it without any difficulty. 1 Why was there a difference?
The answer is : Nisha just knew how to learn better than Sheela did. 2 Here are four steps to better learning.
Preview the matter first.Scan or skim over a material quickly.Read the first sentence of each paragraph, glance at the table of contents and the preface.
3 Speed reading is fine for the easy material. But for more complex works, slower reading is much more effective.Good learners actively think about what they read and assimilate(吸收)it.
Be focused. To improve concentration and focus, fix a particular time and place for studying.Use a variety of methods, like writing down what you’ve read, taping it and then listening to it, making an outline or even drawing a diagram. 4 It will improve your learning capacity(能力).
5 Each person has his own way of learning. If given the pieces of an object to assemble(聚集), each of us uses a different method to arrive at the same result.Analyse your approach and follow the method that you feel most comfortable with.
A.Follow your own learnign style.
B.Slow down and read it aloud to yourself.
C.Take a break if you become too tense or tired.
D.Turn to your heroes or tutors for advice and follow their advice.
E.She increased the capacity of her brain by applying some skills.
F.She only scanned a new poem twice before reciting it from memory!
G.Nisha had a better intelligence than Sheela, which was not true in fact.
Everyone has an ambition(志向) to travel. But those who cannot do so themselves might find it interesting to work in a travel agency (旅行社),arranging journeys for other people. Brian Lawtey does this, working in a small travel agency in the industrial city. Most of his work is concerned with holiday, both at home and abroad. Every autumn, the agency sends out hundreds of booklets (小册子) full of attractive, colored photographs, describing the holidays that their customers will be able to have the next year. Soon, people begin to come into the office to book their holidays:perhaps a week’s skiing in Austria in January, perhaps a cruise (巡游) to the Caribbean in February, perhaps a seaside holiday in Spain in May,or a tour of Africa. Brian often has to advise people on what holidays will be suitable for them, and they always have a lot of questions. Last year, for example,a lady of eighty-two wanted to book for a mountaineering (爬山) holiday in the Alps (阿尔卑斯山),and Brian had great difficulty in persuading her that it would not be suitable. In the end,she decided to go for a Mediterranean cruise instead.
Arranging journeys for people who have to travel abroad on business is often very complicated, but Brian enjoys this work. For example, last spring Mr. Perry,a director of a chemical firm, went on a business trip, and Brian arranged it all for him. First,Mr. Perry traveled to London by train, and stayed overnight in a hotel near the airport, because his plane left early the next morning. He flew to Frankfurt in Germany, where he spent the morning discussing business. Then he went on by train to Zurich (苏黎世),where he stayed the night. After a meeting the next morning,he caught a plane for Tokyo, and spent three days there before going to America. He had business in Seattle (西雅图),Chicago and New York, and stayed some time in each of those places. From New York,he flew back to London, and then got home by train. The next day he telephoned the agency to thank Brian for arranging everything so well for him.

Do you sweat, chew your pencil, and feel butterflies in your stomach as your teacher hands out a test? A lot of people get upset when it’s time to take a test. 1 In fact, sometimes a little stress is a good thing for you.
Here are some tips for taking tests:
● 2 It sounds like a no-brainer(不用动脑的事), but if you’re sure of the information, you’ll have less reason to be worried.
●Get enough sleep the night before the test. 3 In a scientific study, people who got enough sleep before taking a math test did better than those who stayed up all night studying.
● 4 Once you have the test paper in front of you, read over the entire test, checking out how long it is and all the parts that you are expected to complete. This will allow you to estimate how much time you have for each part and ask the teacher any questions. If something seems unclear before you start, don’t worry:ask.
●Relax. 5 Of course you can’t get up and move around in the middle of a test, but you can wiggle(扭动)your fingers and toes, take four or five deep breaths, or picture yourself on a beach or some calm place.
These tips should help most people, but some can get serious test-taking error. If you’re one of them, you may need to talk to a parent or teacher for help.
A.Read the test through first.
B.Be sure you’ve studied properly.
C.Focus on dealing with each question personally.
D.It’s natural to feel some stress about taking tests.
E.Your memory will be much better if you’ve had enough rest.
F.As the teacher hands out the test, be sure you know what’s expected of you.
G.If you’re so nervous that you can’t think of anything, you might need a mini-break.
