第三部分 阅读理解(共20 小题;每小题2分,满分40分)
阅读下列短文,从每题所给的四个选项(A、B、C和D)中,选出最佳选项,并在答题卡上将该项涂黑。
Amanda took whatever pills she could get, largely because she was finding life hard to take. “There were a lot of problems,” she says. She had just found out that her parents were splitting(分开). It took her by surprise—and she was shocked. “I woke up one morning, and they told me.”
“On a few occasions during my two years of going to pharming parties(品药聚会), my heart would race so fast it felt like it was going to explode. I felt weak and confused sometimes and even passed out several times,” she recalls. “But I picked up from the ground because I had a lot of pride in my drinking and drugging. I was really crazy about it and proud of the fact that I could take more than a lot of people.”
Finally, though, things got out of control. “I couldn’t go a day without taking something,” she recalls, “and after a while, the pills upset my stomach; it hurt all the time, and I hardly ate. Finally, I couldn’t take it any more. I went to my parents and told them I needed help.”
Amanda entered a treatment program and has been calm since her release last January. “Detox(戒瘾) was the worst four days of my entire life,” she says. “I was throwing up all the food and had the shakes.”
She doesn’t care about drugs. “I’m so hurt from this,” says Amanda, who has ulcers(溃疡) and damaged kidneys from the drugs and alcohol. “I have to struggle daily to stay calm. But in some ways, I feel lucky I went through it, and I’m out of it now.” Amanda wrote a song called “Goodnight to the Moonlight”. Amanda says, “It’s about how it feels to be taking drugs and alcohol, how it hurts, how it makes you feel like you’re losing yourself.”

Most scientists believe that man-made chemicals are destroying the ozone. They also have found signs of ozone loss in other parts of the atmosphere.
Ozone is found both in the air we breathe and in the upper atmosphere. Near the earth, ozone in the air is a danger to life. It is a waste product. But ozone found 10 to 50 kilometers up in the atmosphere protects life on earth. Ozone is formed in the atmosphere through the action of solar radiation. Once formed, the ozone blocks harmful radiation from reaching the earth. Scientists say a reduction in ozone and an increase in the harmful radiation will cause many more cases of skin cancer and will harm crops, animals and fishes.
The report said it is about 8 degrees colder 15 kilometers above earth than it was in 1979. Scientists think the first loss of ozone reduces the amount of solar energy the atmosphere can take in. This cools the atmosphere, increases ice cloud production and leads to more ozone loss.
Scientists found signs the ozone problem has spread. The study shows that the loss of ozone over the areas with larger population in North America and Europe was at least three times greater than scientists had thought. The ozone levels reduced much more seriously during winter months than in warmer months. This is not surprising because the amount of ozone in the atmosphere changes with the temperature.
An international effort is being made to stop the loss of ozone in the atmosphere. But many experts fear that the effort will not produce results fast enough to prevent harm to life on the earth.

D. The ozone up above us can stop harmful radiation from getting to the earth.
3. The loss of ozone may be caused by the following conditions except for_______.
A. the amount of solar energy B. the colder temperature
C. the larger population D. man-made chemicals
4. From the text we have learned that_______.
A. the scientists have done a great deal to stop getting warm on the earth
B. the temperature in 1979 was much colder than it is now
