If you want to see a thing well, reach out and touch it
Your eyes can tell you that a glass ball is round. But by holding it in your hands, you can feel how smooth and cool the ball is. You can feel how heavy the glass is.
The roundness, smoothness, coolness and heaviness are parts of the ball. When you feel all these things about the ball, you really see it.
With your skin, you can feel surprisingly well. For example, your fingers can tell the difference between a nickel and dime in your pocket. You can feel a tiny drop of water on the back of your hand, or a puff of air against your skin. You can even feel sounds against your skin.
Most of us like the feel of fur. We like to touch a fur coat or a fur collar .And we like to pet a kitten because of its soft fur.
All children soon learn what “ Don’t touch” means. They hear it often. Yet most of us keep right on touching things as we grow up.
The bottoms of our feet can feel things, too. You know this when you walk barefoot. Warm sand, cool grass and a soft rug all feel different beneath your feet.
There are ways of learning to see well by feeling. One way is to close your eyes and try to feel everything that is touching your skin. Feel the shoes on your feet, the clothes on your body, the air on your skin. At first, it is not easy to feel these things consciously. You are too used to them.
Most exhibits in museums are just for looking. But today some museums have some things to touch. Their sings say, “Do touch!”
There you can feel the shape of a gun, the smooth silk of a pillow, the rough wood of an old chair. If you want to see better, reach out and touch. Then you will really see!

查看习题详情和答案>>Though we were poor, my sister managed to buy me a pair of “magic shoes” that changed my life.
Anne is six years older than me. Growing up, we were very poor, and my mother worked evenings at a factory in a small town. Not seeing my mother much, Anne took over much of the support. During those teenage years, Anne was always there for me, not only as a big sister, but as a mother and my best friend.
When I was seventeen,I had no money. I thought my only chance of going to college was trying to win a scholarship. I had an important interview for such an award. I told her about my interview, that General Motors was sending me a bus ticket, and I would get to visit the city for my scholarship interview. I was excited about the adventure* and asked her advice on what to wear. I showed her my best coat and how I planned to be careful, how I sat so that the hole in the bottom of my shoe would not be seen, but I wasn’t sure what I would do if it rained.
Anne suggested that we should go shopping, and we took the bus to a store. There we found a beautiful pair of leather shoes on sale. She told me to try them on, but I thought it was just for fun .As neither of us had ever owned anything that expensive before. But this time was different. Anne handed me the boxed shoes and said, “Here, I’ll buy these for you.”
“But…” was all I could say.
“You deserve* them,” she replied. “I want to see you get that scholarship.”
I went to the interview and crossed my legs so that my beautiful new shoes shone with pride. I won the scholarship and became an engineer. Now, after twenty years have passed, I still have that pair of shoes with me, and I just wear them on those occasions* when I need to feel special. It’s kind of like having magic slippers when you’re homesick.

live on the planet Mars. Our own planet, Earth, is becoming more and more crowed and polluted. Luckily,
we can start again and build a better world on Mars. Here is what life could be like.
First of all, transport should be much better. At present, our spaceships are too slow to carry large
numbers of people to Mars-it takes months. However, by 2100, spaceship can travel at half the speed of
light. It might take us two or three days to get to Mars!
Secondly, humans need food, water and air to live. Scientists should be able to develop plants that can
be grown on Mars. These plants will produce the food and air that we need. However, can these plants
produce water for us? There is no answer now.
There is a problem for us to live on Mars. Mars pulls us much less than the Earth does. This will be
dangerous because we could easily jump too high and fly slowly away into space. To prevent this, humans
on Mars have to wear special shoes to make themselves heavier.
Life on Mars will be better than that on Earth in many ways, People will have more space. Living in a
large building with only 10 bedrooms is highly possible. Many people believe that robot will do most of our
work, so we have more time for our hobbies.
There will probably be no school on Mars. Every student will have a computer at home which is
connected to the internet. They can study, do their homework and take exams in online schools. Each student
will also have their own online teacher called "e-teacher".
However, in some ways, life on Mars may not be better than that on the earth today. Food will not be
the same-meals will probably be in the form of pills and will not be as delicious as they are today. Also,
space travel will make many people feel ill. The spaceship will travel fast but the journey to Mars will probably
be very uncomfortable.
B. on the moon
C. under the sea
D. in the sun
B. A few months
C. A few days
D. A few years
B. will study mainly in a classroom
C. will meet each other face to face every day
D. needn't study at all
B. there will be more space and less work to do
C. there will be much delicious food
D. all students don't need to do any homework
B. We need to develop a special plant which can produce water.
C. On Mars, we can jump higher than on the earth.
D. Food will be much more tasty.
The Australians had a great idea to stop people from drinking and driving. The idea was that if a driver wanted to start the car, she or he would have to blow into a bag first. If there was too much alcohol(酒精) in their breath, the car wouldn’t start. It sounded like a great idea to me, but people said that they might need to drive the car in an emergency even if they had drunk too much alcohol. Another idea I liked was an invention by a scientist who thought his children watched too much TV. He linked the TV to an exercise bike so that the electricity to power the TV was generated(产出) by the bike. If the children wanted to watch a lot of TV, they had to pedal(踩踏板) very hard. I found another invention on the Internet which was intended (倾向于) to encourage good habits. Believe it or not, this invention was an ashtray(烟灰缸) which spoke to you when you lit a cigarette! The “voice” of the ashtray was activated (启动) by the heat from the cigarette and reminded you how dangerous it is to smoke.
One of the strangest inventions I have come across is a bicycle which can cross rivers! The idea was that when you came to a river, you could inflate a huge plastic ball all around the bike. You would then get into the ball which would float on the river while you pedaled the bike inside the ball! Why not use a bridge instead? A friend of mine at school once bought a strange pair of football shoes. On the bottom of the shoes there was a rotating pad of studs (转动钉垫). The idea was that you would change direction more quickly if the studs rotated with you. The problem was that every time you stopped you changed direction whether you wanted to or not! I think he wore those shoes twice! One thing I would like is a baseball cap with a built-in radio so you can listen to sport all day with your hands free. While we are on the subject of sport, the Americans invented a kind of robot for sports fans. If you were watching your team on TV on your own, you could press a button and the robot would do “high fives” with you! Fantastic! I wonder if you have any good ideas for inventions like these.
