I'd meant to go to Miros that day. I'd packed my bag and was ready. The motor-boat 1 in on time. The sky was cloudy, but the wind wasn't too strong for the two-hour 2 . I stood at my window, staring at the boat. Then I lost 3 of her, an old light-house partly blocking my view of the harbour(港口). A dozen passengers were 4 their way there. I was about to join them when a man's face 5 at the light-house window.

This was strange, because the light-house had been empty, unused and 6 for thirty years. It was stranger still, because I'd seen that 7 before. I couldn't place it but it was, or had once been, familiar to me. I opened my window and 8 across.

“I know we've met before, but I can't remember where.”

I 9 him to open his window if he could and answer me. He did neither. The face behind the glass 10 motionless(没有表情). Seeing him more clearly now, I knew he was not looking at me. He seemed to be looking upwards, 11 the clouds. How well I had known that face, sometime, somewhere!

I 12 again.“We met years ago. Was it in Athens in the 1950s? I used to live in Plaka.”

He didn't reply nor give any 13 that he'd heard. I went back further, to 14 I was in the navy (海军).“Perhaps we met at sea during the war,”and that thought at once 15 him to mind. Commander Leftis! He was Commander Leftis of course! How could I have forgotten? I'd saved his life once. But surely he…

The motor-boat 16 her bell. I turned my eyes. The wind had risen, but she was pulling 17 . Laughing, I called,“Now I've missed her, and it's your 18 , Commander!”

As the boat drew away, the face at the window faded. 19 minute it was there, looking up. I could see the whites of the eyes. The 20 it was gone.

Well, I didn't rush to the light-house. I knew that Leftis was dead. He died at sea in 1963 or' 64. But there's one other thing I ought to tell you: the motor-boat never reached Miros. It was lost in a storm, with all the passengers.

Most people have sometimes though:"I should like to fly like a bird." Many people have tried! We do not know about all the people who have tried to fly but we know about some of them.

In about 1020, for example, an Englishman, Oliver, tried to fly with wings like a bird's.He covered more than two hundred meters before he fell to the ground and broke both his arms and legs. But Oliver seemed quite pleased. He said he had made one little mistake. He had forgotten to wear a tail like a bird's.After that he never tried again.

In 1507,an Italian, named John Damain, tried to fly in Scotland. He wore a pair of wings made from hens' feathers, and jumped from the walls. He fell like a stone to the ground below and broke a leg.

Damain was very disappointed. He said, "I made a mistake.I used hens' feathers and hens do not often fly.I ought to have used the feathers of a bird that flies. Then I am sure I would have flown." But when he was well again, Damain, like Oliver, never tried once again.

An Italian scientist, John Borelli, spent much time thinking about flying. Finally, in 1680, he wrote a book having a great many calculations. They proved that men would never be able to fly with wings strapped to their arms.Borelli worked out that a man's arms were not strong enough to support him in the air.

We know now that he was right but some people took no notice of what Borelli said.In 1742, a Frenchman, although he was an old man, tried to fly across the River Seine, in Paris, with wings strapped to his arms.He jumped from a house beside the river and fell down on to a boat below. He was fortunate and only broke a leg.

Today men can do much better, though they still cannot fly like birds. They use very light, strong wings called "hang-gliders".One man landed safely after jumping from a balloon at 32,700 feet!Another stayed in the air for 19 hours 36 minutes! They still sometimes hurt themselves.

That afternoon Molly almost danced along the street, as she walked home with her father from the station. They had seen Mrs. Gibson and Cynthia off to London. She wished her stepmother would take herself off to London much more often.

“Well now, Dad.” she said, “I’m going to have you all to myself for a whole week. You must be very obedient(服从的,听话的).”

“I hope you aren’t going to boss me, Molly. You’re walking me out of breath already. We mustn’t pass Mrs. Goodmays in our hurry.” They crossed the street to speak to Mrs. Goodmays, one of the doctor’s patients. “We’ve just been seeing my wife and daughter off to London. They’ve gone up for a week.”

“Dear me, to London, and only for a week!” said Mrs. Goodmays, with surprise. “It seems hardly worth the packing. It’ll be lonely for you,  Molly, without your stepsister.”

“Yes,” said Molly, suddenly feeling as if she ought to have taken this view of the case “I’ll miss Cynthia.”

“And you, Dr. Gibson, I hope you won’t feel like widower(鳏夫) once again. You must come and have supper with me one evening. What about Tuesday?”

Dr. Gibson felt a sharp blow on his leg from the toe of Molly’s shoe, but even so he accepted the invitation, much to the old lady’s satisfaction.

A moment later Molly said to him, “How could you go and waste one of our precious evenings! We’ve only go five now. I’ve been planning all sorts of things for us two tonight.” “What sort of things?”

“Oh, I don’t know. Things you used to like.” She looked at him fearlessly. “Forbidden things now.”

Her father’s eyes lit up, but his face remained serious. “I’m got going to be pulled down, Molly. With hard work and sensible guidance I’ve reached a very height of civilized behavior, and there I’m going to stay.”

“Oh, no, you are not. We’re having bread and cheese for supper tonight, in armchairs in front  of the TV! And you shall wear you dressing-gown at breakfast tomorrow-and every morning for a week! And you shall read the paper at the dining table! That’s only a start. I haven’t finished by a long way yet.”
