One way of preventing (×èÖ¹) floods may be by making rain! This may sound rather 1 . As we know, heavy rain is the 2 of floods, and in Malaysia, most of the 3  are caused by the annual monsoon (Ò»ÄêÒ»¶ÈµÄʪ¼¾·ç), which brings heavy rain to the east coast. If, 4 ,the rain could be made 5  in the South China Sea, there would be 6 floods since the rain could not reach the east coast.

Is it possible to make 7  give up their rain? Yes, it is.

As you probably know, clouds are caused  8  air containing water-vapor (Ë®ÕôÆø). The air rises and, since water-vapor 9  water when it cools, very tiny drops of water are formed. Since these drops are very10 , they float (Ư¸¡) in the air and 11  a cloud. When the cloud rises, however, the drop becomes 12  . Because of this, they 13  together and become big drops. The big drops are no longer able to float because of their 14  , and they fall. As they 15 , they pick up more drops and become bigger. This is the cause of rain.

Rain making 16  making these bigger drops form and fall 17 they would normally do so. This can be done by ¡°seeding¡± the clouds with chemicals,  18  planting seeds in the ground. Rain can be produced 19  by these chemicals. The seeding is done by 20  which fly through the clouds.

What makes it rain? Rain falls from clouds for the same reason that anything falls to earth. The earth's gravity(ÒýÁ¦)pulls it. But every cloud is made of water droplets(΢µÎ)or ice crystals(½á¾§). Why doesn't rain or snow fall continuously from all clouds? The droplets or ice¡¡¡¡ crystals in clouds are very small. The effect of gravity on them is tiny.

¡¡¡¡

Droplets and ice crystals act like dust in the air which¡¡¡¡ is made visible in the rays of sunlight. To the careless observer, dust seems to act in a totally disorderly way, moving about freely without fixed direction. But in fact dust particles(΢Á£)are much larger than water droplets and they finally fall. The cloud droplet of ordinary size is only 1/2500 inch in diameter (Ö±¾¶). It is so small that it would take sixteen hours to fall half a mile in perfectly still air, and it does¡¡¡¡ not fall out of moving air at all. Only when the droplet grows to a diameter of 1/125 inch or larger can it fall from the cloud. The ordinary raindrop has a million times as much water as a tiny cloud droplet. The growth of a cloud droplet to a size large enough to fall out is the cause of rain.

¡¡¡¡ (1)  Why don't all ice crystals in clouds immediately fall to earth?

C. The clouds prevent them from falling.

D. The heat from the sun's rays makes them turn into steam. ¡¡¡¡ ¡¡¡¡

(2)  What conclusion can we draw from drops of water larger  than 1/120 inch in diameter?¡¡¡¡

A. They fall to the ground slowly. ¡¡¡¡ ¡¡¡¡

B. In moving air they fall at a speed of thirty-two miles per ¡¡¡¡ hour

C. In still air they would fall to earth. ¡¡¡¡ ¡¡¡¡

D. The earth's gravity has no effect on them.¡¡¡¡  ¡¡¡¡ ¡¡¡¡
