Make Up Your Mind to Succeed

Kind-hearted parents have unknowingly left their children defenseless against failureThe generation (age) born between 1980 and 2001 grew up playing sports where scores (marks) and performance (show) were played down because “everyone's winner.” And their report cards sounded more positive than ever beforeAs a result, Stanford University professor Carol Dweck, PhD, calls them “the overpraised generation.”

Dweck has been studying how people deal with failure for 40 yearsHer research has led her to find out two clearly different mind-sets that have a great effect on how we react to itHere's how they work:

A fixed mind-set is grounded in the belief that talent is genetic – you're a born artist, point guard, or numbers personThe fixed mind-set believes it's sure to succeed without much effort and regards failure as personal shameWhen things get difficult, it's quick to blame (liability), lie, and even stay away from future difficulties.

On the other hand, a growth mind-set believes that no talent is entirely heaven-sent and that effort and learning make everything possibleBecause the ego (自尊) isn't on the line as much, the growth mind-set sees failure as a chance rather than shameWhen faced with a difficulty, it's quick to rethink, change and try againIn fact, it enjoys this experience.

We are all born with growth mind-sets(Otherwise, we wouldn't be able to live in the world.) But parents, teachers, and instructors often push us into fixed mind-sets by encouraging certain actions and misdirecting praiseDweck's book, Mind-set: The New Psychology of Success, and online instructional program explain this in depthBut she says there are many little things you can start doing today to make sure that your children, grandchildren and even you are never defeated by failure.

1.What does the author think about the present generation?

AThey don't do well at school.

BThey are often misunderstood.

DThey are given too much praise.

2.A fixed mind-set person is probably one who ___ .

Adoesn't want to work hard

Bcares a lot about personal safety

We are all interested in equality, but while some people try to protect the school and examination system in the name of equality, others, still in the name of equality, want only to destroy it.

Any society which is interested in equality of opportunity and standards of achievement must regularly test its pupils. The standards may be changed –no examination is perfect-but to have no tests or examinations would mean the end of equality and of standards. There are groups of people who oppose this view and who do not believe either in examinations or in any controls in schools or on teachers. This would mean that everything would depend on luck since every pupil would depend on the efficien, the values and the purpose of each teacher.

Without examinations, employers will look for employees from the highly respected schools and from families known to them-a form of favourtism will replace equality. At the moment, the bright child from an ill-respected school can show certificates to prove he or she is suitable for a job, while the lack of certificate indicates the unsuitability of a dull child attending a well-respected school. This defence of excellence and opportunity would disappear if examinations were taken away, and the bright child from a poor family would be a prisoner of his or her school’s reputation, unable to compete for employment with the child from the favoured school.

The opponents of the examination system suggest that examinations are an evil force because they show differences between pupils.According to these people, there must be no special, different, academic class. They have even suggested that there should be no form of difference in sport or any other area:all jobs or posts should be filled by unsystematic selection. The selection would be made by people who themselves are probably selected by some computer.

[ ]

A.

Schools for bright children would lose their reputation.

B.

There would be more opportunities and excellence.

C.

Children from poor families would be able to change their schools.

D.

Children’s job opportunity would be affected by their school reputation.

(3)

The opponents of the examination system will agree that ________.

[ ]

A.

jobs should not be assigned by systematic selection

B.

computers should be selected to take over many jobs

C.

special classes are necessary to keep the school standards

D.

schools with academic subjects should be done away with

(4)

The passage mainly focuses on ________.

[ ]

A.

schools and certificates

When researchers made their first clone of an animal, Dolly the Sheep, in 1997, one doctor said,“The genie(妖怪)is out of the bottle.”But then he tried to actually create the“genie”by making a human clone.
