Maybe ten?year?old Elizabeth put it best when she said to her father,“But,Dad,you can’t be healthy if you’re dead.”

Dad,in a hurry to get home before dark so he could go for a run,had forgotten to wear his safety belt—a mistake 75% of US population make every day.The big question is why.

There have been many myths about safety belts ever since their first appearance in cars some forty years ago.The following are three of the most common.

Myth Number One: It’s best to be “thrown clear” of a serious accident.

Truth: Sorry, but any accident serious enough to “throw you clear” is going to be serious enough to give you a very bad landing. And chances are you’ll have traveled through a windshield (挡风玻璃)or door to do it.Studies show that chances of dying after a car accident are twenty?five times in cases where people are “thrown clear”.

Myth Number Two: Safety?belts “trap” people in cars that are burning or sinking in water.

Truth: Sorry again, but studies show that people knocked unconscious (昏迷) due to not wearing safety belts have a greater chance of dying in these accidents.People wearing safety belts are usually protected to the point of having a clear head to free themselves from such dangerous situation, not to be trapped in them.

Myth Number Three: Safety belts aren’t needed at speeds of less than 30 miles per hour (mph).

Truth: When two cars traveling at 30 mph hit each other,an unbelted driver would meet the windshield with a force equal to diving head first into the ground from a height of 10 metres.

D.He didn’t take his medicine on time.

2.The reason father was in a hurry to get home was that he .

A.wasn’t feeling very well B.hated to drive in the dark

C.wanted to take some exercise D.didn’t want to be caught by the police

3.According to the text,to be “thrown clear” of a serious accident is very dangerous because

  you .

A.may be knocked down by other cars

B.may get serious hurt thrown out of the car

C.may find it impossible to get away from the seat

D.may get caught in the car door

4.Some people prefer to drive without wearing a safety belt because they believe .

A.the belt prevents them from escaping in an accident

B.they will be unable to think clearly in an accident

C.they will be caught when help comes

  D.cars catch fire easily

5.What is the advice given in the test?

A.Never drive faster than 30 miles an hour.

We all, at one time or another, have pretended to be a rock star, singing and dancing along to our favorite song. Most of us have done this in the privacy of our own room when we were kids and as adults, in the privacy of our homes. Me? I love to do that when I drive! I turn on the radio, find a song that I can sing along too and pretty soon my arms are in the air and I am moving along to the rhythm. Most of the time, I do this on my way to work.

Yes, that is true. I will be in my nice work clothes, jamming while driving or stopped at a traffic light. I get weird looks from some people and others laugh. Personally, I love to get lost in the rhythm of a song which leads me to share with you the importance of being silly!

The definition for the word silly, according to the dictionary is: stupid, foolish and nonsensical. I know many people do not want to look foolish. So they walk around all serious, which in all honesty, is foolish!

No one is perfect, I repeat: no one is perfect. I don’t care how educated, how thin, how beautiful, how simple, how frugal, how rich, and so on… No one is perfect! So why pretend to be something you are not?

Life is so short… You never know when this beautiful journey will be over, so why waste a single second on being so full of rigidity(呆板)? Here is a quote by Souza, that I think says it all and is a great recipe for life:

"Dance as though no one is watching you,

Love as though you have never been hurt before,

Sing as though no one can hear you,

Live as though heaven is on earth."

When we were kids, we had no idea of what limitations were and we had no care in the world so we could do things without worrying about how we appeared to others. However, as we grew up, we lost that childlike innocence.

So don’t lose the child that still lives within you. The next time you feel down, go turn on your favorite song, and sing and dance along like there is no tomorrow. Or watch something that makes you laugh. Laughter is the best medicine to whatever ails you and nothing is better than laughing so hard that your tummy hurts. Trust me, you will feel a whole lot better, and who doesn’t want to feel good?

1. According to the passage, what does the writer usually do?

A.He pretends to be a rock star.

B.He dances in his own home.

C.He sings songs while going to work.

D.He gets jammed on his way to work.

2.What do other people think of the writer?

A.They think that the writer is strange.

B.They look down upon the writer.

C.They believe that the writer is lonely.

D.No one is interested in the writer.

3. What is the writer’s opinion about the people who look very serious?

A.They are honest.

B.They are silly.

C.They are perfect.

D.They are educated.

4. The writer quotes Souza to show that _______.

A.life is a beautiful journey

B.life is full of rigidity

C.life is like a great recipe

D.life is to be treasured

5.The underlined part “the child” in the last paragraph probably refers to _______.

A.the writer

C.the feeling of being a child

D.the time of being a child

Reading Comprehension

Cloze Test

Think you're good at reading people's expressions? Well, think again.New software is ten per cent better at it than the average person. There's even a device to improve your emotional intelligence.

Every time you interact with people, you 1 unconscious signals that you're following what they're saying. 2 , you might nod to show that you're following or squint(眯眼看)a bit to show that you've lost track. However, we're not very good at interpreting these signals. 3 we only get it right about half of the time.

Now social X-ray glasses can help you 4 some of these signals better by means of a built-in camera 5 to software which 6 facial expressions. The six basic 7 facial states it recognizes are:thinking, agreeing, concentrating, interested, confused and disagreeing. The device can read 24 'feature points' on a face and 8 which of these six general facial states is being 9 .You get the information via an earpiece, which tells you how the listener is responding. There's also a traffic light system displayed on the lens with a red, amber(yellowishbrown)or green light to show that the listener is interested, 10 interested or not interested. If it shows red, it's time to shut up!

The other novelty(something new)is sociometric badges. These are 11 to provide feedback on how often you're speaking, for how long and who with. Each person is represented by a dot, which is larger if you're talkative and smaller if not.If you speak in a monologue the dot will turn red, but if it's a dialogue it turns white. The interaction between speakers is represented by lines between them, so a thick line if two people speak a lot to each other and very thin if they 12 speak. The information is sent wirelessly to any device that can display it graphically. In one experiment, 13 some of the speakers started with very different dots, by the end of the experiment all the dots were more or less the same size and color, 14 that people had changed their behavior and made the interaction more even.

Think how differently our interactions with people could be if we could read their 15 to what we're saying with x-ray specs and track how well we work as a group with a sociometric badge! It's early days, but these devices may well transform how we interact with each other in the future.
