A. “Better road design and training hold the key to cycle safety”, the new Transport Secretary said today as he pledged to restore Britain’s safety record. Patrick McLoughlin told Conservative Party Conference that while cycling was enjoying a post-Olympics boom, the number of casualties among cyclists was also rising. “But the number of accidents has gone up too. That means it needs better design and better education too.” Mr McLoughlin said in his first speech as Transport Secretary.
B.  Cycling in the UK will become safer through “sheer weight of numbers,” the founder of one of the world’s leading cycle brands has said as he backed The Times’s Cyclesafe campaign. Simon Mottram, founder and chief executive of Rapha, has added his support to 40 cross-party MPs who have signed a letter urging David Cameron to use his speech at the Conservative Party Conference to promote measures to make the streets safer for cyclists.
C.  Commuters who cycle to work face an increased danger as the casualty toll during peak hours rose by 10 percent last year. The rate at which cyclists were killed or seriously injured rose sharply last year, official figures showed yesterday.
D.  In future decades, Londoners will look back on the way cyclists jostled with buses and lorries on major roads as an absurd anachronism. Some risks are unavoidable. But other risks survive only because we are too slow to embrace bold solutions. That is the message from designers who are proposing an ambitious plan to create cycle lanes suspended above London’s busiest streets. London is one of the most dangerous places in the world for cycling. “SkyCycle” would remedy that problem by attaching dedicated cycle paths to existing railway viaducts.
E.  Money should be apportioned from the funding for major transport projects, such as the new Forth Crossing, to create a pot of cash for cycling, campaigners have told MSPs. Cycle groups have given warning that not enough money is being put into routes and promotion. They want the Scottish government to take a percentage of the funding allocated to key national projects and create an “active transport” fund to be distributed gradually.
F.  We’d like you to tell us why you love cycling by sending a photo of yourself, a family member or friend with their bike and a note about why it is so brilliant. In the Caucasus Mountains of Russia, nearly fifty out of every one hundred thousand people live to celebrate their hundredth birthday, and many don’t stop at 100! By comparison, in America only three in one hundred thousand people reach 100. But these Russian old people aren’t alone. The Pakistanis, who live in the Himalaya Mountains and the Ecuadorans of the Andes Mountains, seem to share the secret of long life, too. These people remain healthy in body and spirit in spite of the passage of time. While many persons in industrial societies become weak and ill in their 60s and 70s, some Caucasians, aged 110 to 140, work in the fields beside their great grandchildren. Even the idea of aging is foreign to them. When asked, “at what age does youth end?” most of these old people had no answer. Several replied, “well, perhaps at the age of 80,” and the very youngest estimate was at the age of 60.

What accounts for this ability to survive to such an old age, and to survive so well? First of all, hard physical work is a way of life for all these long – lived people. They begin their long days of physical labor as children and never seem to stop.

All these people get healthful rewards from the environment in which they work. They all come from mountainous regions. This environment makes the heart and blood vessel system stronger.

Another factor that may contribute to the good health of these people is their isolation (隔离). To a great extent, they are separated from the pressures and worries of industrial society. Inherited(遗传的)factors also play some role.

It is clear that isolation from urban pressures and pollution, clean mountain air, daily hard work, moderate diets, good genes, and a youthful approach to life all contribute to the health and long life of all these people.

64. Why does the writer mention some long – lived people in the first paragraph?

    A. To introduce the subject of the article.

    B. To surprise his readers with some facts.

    C. To tell the difference between people in the Soviet Union and America.

    D. To tell you why Americans don’t live as long as other people.

65. From the writer’s viewpoint, industrial society .

    A. is highly developed and beneficial to people

    B. is a great advance in human history

    C. is full of pressures and therefore bad for health

    D. can make people’s life better and better

66. Which of the following is true according to the passage?

    A. It is beneficial for people to work and live in industrial society.

    B. People should relax themselves from high pressures of life in industrial society.

    C. The more hard physical work you do, the more healthy you will be.

    D. People’s health mainly depends on inherited factors.

67. The following factors except _________ contribute to the health and long life of all these people.

A. clean mountain air B. daily hard work

C. good genes D. pressures and worries

In normal conditions, bread will go mouldy(霉)in around 10 days. But an American company says it has developed a technique that will keep the bread mould free for two months.

At the laboratory or Texas Tech University, chief executive Don Stull showed off the long, metallic microwave device. Originally designed to kill some bacteria, the researchers discovered it could kill the mould spores(霉孢)in bread in 10 seconds. “We treated a slice of bread in the device, we then checked the mould in the bread over time,”he explained.“And at 60 days it had the same mould content as it had when it came out.”

The machine uses much the same technology as found in commercial microwaves—but with some important differences, according to Mr. Stull.“We introduce the microwave frequencies in different ways, through a radiator. We don’t get the hot and cold spots you get in your home microwave.”

The device has attracted plenty of bread manufacturers—but it is worried that it could push up costs in an industry. And there is also a concern that consumers might not take to bread that lasts for so long.

Mr. Stull acknowledges it might be difficult to convince some people of the benefits. “We’ll have to get some consumer acceptance of that,” he said. “Most people do it by feel, and if you still have that quality feel, they will probably accept it.”

Mr. Stull believes that the technology could affect bread in other ways. He said that bread manufacturers added lots of additives(添加剂)to fight mould. As a result, they must add extra chemicals to mask the taste of them. If bakers were able to use the microwave technology, they would be able to avoid these additives. While a wholesale change in the bread industry might be difficult to achieve, there may be more potential with other foods.

71.The microwave device was originally designed to___________.

A. make bread tasty                            B. kill some bacteria

C. kill the mould spores                D. check mould in bread

72.What do the metallic device and commercial microwaves have in common?

A. they both can kill mould spores.              B. They both function through a radiator.

C. They both use microwave technology.     D. They both can be used as a bread bakery.

73.According to Mr. Stull, the microwave technology _________.

A. may push up costs in the bread industry

B. will keep the bread more tasty after 60 days

C. can help bakers to avoid adding additives

D. might probably bring no benefits to consumers

74.What does the underlined word“them”refer to?

A. Chemicals.        B. Additives.          C. Manufacturers.         D. Foods.

75.It can be inferred from the text that__________.

A. bread made with the technology will have different taste

B. bread industry will pay no attention to the technology

C. the technology is as harmful as the additives

D. the technology is likely to be used more widely
